FXF Member PhilippeVdp was lucky enough to get his hands on a XF 90mmF2 WR lens during a Fuji event at his local camera store.
Now, he calls himself an amateur photographer (“I’ve just registered myself for a portrait / streetphotography course to learn how to take decent photo“), and when the Fuji Guy asked him if he wanted to test the XF90mmF2, he was a bit nervous:
“I was so nervous in the beginning that I didn’t notice the iso 3200, exposure comp on +1… … but then I relaxed and tried city portraits. […] and after using it for 2 hours or so … I was sold and ordered one“.
He shared his story and three samples over at our New Fuji X Forum, and at the end he said:
“I’m really an amateur […] but if these are the kind of photos I can make with that lens, just wonder what a skilled photographer can do with it!”
…
And now repeat with me: “I… don’t… need … this…. lens… must…. resist“!

About the XF90mm release: according to AmazonUS, the XF 90mmF2 WR will be released on July 11. There was a bit of confusion caused by AmazonUK, who said here, that they expected the XF 90mm to be released on June 18th. Well, they corrected it now to July 27… so it’s still a very long wait.

I held out against buying the 50-140 in order to get this lens, sounding like it will be well worth the wait. Used to have the Canon 135/2 and this will give a very similar look.
I’m also a former Canon 135L user… love the 56 already but i’ll struggle to avoid this temptation. How much can you get for a kidney these days?
that’s not funny. stupid kids in China really sell their kidneys for an iPod.
Lighten up, pal. Nobody cares.
really?? so what do they do when the new one comes out.
It has been known to happen – But I could find “only” one report dated 2012 when one kid reportedly did that. So by the looks of it you should use a past tense. and “costing an harm and a leg” is a common phrase, granted not kidney but still
A FOV of 135, sure, but a DOF of 2,8. Seems pretty nice so far.
I used to use my 135 at f/2.8 sometimes, still a very nice look and only a marginal difference to at 2.0. A 90mm f/1.4 would be a similar size to the Canon, fine on a 5D, but a bit cumbersome on an X-T1 I think.
Now the sony-FE mount zeiss batis 85mm f/1.8 lens is even lighter than XF 90f2. It is a full frame lens with a small OLED screen for DOF info. List price is 1200 usd. I think that is innovation. The recent fujifilm xf lens are rather old-school, big and heavy. Most important, they are too expensive compared to Sony FE lens.
Then , go buy a Sony and stop bitching about Fuji if you don’t like them…
I am getting tired of people bitching every day on this site..
Go buy whatever you want, and go out take some photos.. 🙂 😉
ps : Nothing personal, but you were the first comment in line
I do not get your point. Do you mean no one can criticize Fuji X system?
Uhhh… I think you should be comparing the Zeiss to the Fuji 56mm as they share the same field of view. Sony doesn’t have a lens comparable to this new 90mm F2. Also, the Zeiss is heavier than the Fuji 56mm, more expensive, and loses most of its light/DoF advantage by being f1.8 vs. f1.2 for the Fuji.
Yes, what you said is the advantage of a smaller sensor. But for optics, XF 90mm F2 is similar to FE 85mm F1.8. I just want to point out there is a possibility to make a solid XF lens but lighter, if fuji developers are good enough.
First of all, you should compare this new lens to the Fuji 56 1.2 instead, concerning the field of view of these two lenses.
What about the weight issue? Big and heavy?
Fuji 56 1.2 405g (BH price now 850 USD)
Zeiss Batis 85 1.8 475g (1200 USD)
The only advantage I see, is the image stabilization. OLED display, yes… But who really cares? I also prefer the aperture rings on the Fuji lenses, and in general the overall handling of the X-series cameras.
But, hey! Why don´t you head over to sonyalpharumors.com instead? It might be better suited for you 🙂
Yes, XF 56mm provides a similar field of view. But from the point of view of optic and build, FE 85mm is fair to compare with XF 90mm because of similar focal lengths and aperture. XF system should try to provide lighter weight because of the smaller sensor to cover.
But actually XF 90mm is much heavier than a zeiss full frame lens.
You know, most of fujirumor visitors like fuji X system very much, but that’s also the reason we hope fuji make better lens than others.
Recently Fuji brings several heavy lens to us, even a zoom without OIS. But I think it is possible to make solid lens but easy to carry around, just as sony-zeiss showed.
That’s the thing with Fuji. Small/light OR big/heavy! Your choice!
And again you have to compare similiar FOV of the lenses… I have the 23mm 1.4 and 56 1.2, and that’s all I need. You think that’s such big and heavy setup? Think again.
I don’t miss my Nikon FF at all, even if I had the Nikkor AF-S 85 1.4. Would I switch over to Sony? Not at all. And who says Fujinon optics aren’t among the best?
Ok so here is a question: how far away would you need to be to get a full body shot with the 90? How about the 56? Which would have the better background separation/thinner DOF look?
Sorry for coming to this party late, but PhillippeVdp’s flickr photo stream suggests he’s anything but an amateur. Check out the sheer number of model shoots (several in various states of undress), all before he went to sign up for a class. Back in 2012, he was apparently “testing” the Canon EF 135mm f2 L, and while passing by took a couple of shots of this bride (see below). We should all be such amateurs.
