Fuji X-T1 Super-Firmware Ver. 4.0 to download on June 18th (source right in the past)

 photo dd_zpsnhnvkqji.jpg

Let me “risk” this rumor… and not because I think it is wrong (it comes from a source, who was right in the past), but because if there is one thing that Fuji can change in any moment, even just a day before its release, than it’s new Firmware updates!

So here it is: the new Firmware ver.4.0 for the Fuji X-T1 should be available for download on June 18th… which is exactly when the Fujifilm X-T10 should hit the market!

If I hear about any change or get a confirmation, I’ll let you know here on FujiRumors! One thing is sure… it will be a very long month!

  1. What is so different about the X-10 that “the JPEG engine (in the X-10) produces larger and hence more robust files with less compression” than an XT-1 with the 4.0 firmware update?

    1. They apparently changed (improved?) the JPEG engine in the X30 and the X100T, which results in bigger files. Don’t know if this change will be implemented in the X-T1 firmware v.4.00

      1. On the X30 – as soon as you have an underexposed image => you’ve got a jpeg which is a very nice impressionist version of your image.
Granted I started with images not quite properly exposed, so I am not too bothered that the Jpeg was showing artifacts and whatnot.

And in any event, the raw were still excellent.

    2. I asked a Fuji rep about this yesterday, while trying the X-T10, and he said he had no knowledge of this and as far as he knew, nothing has changed about how the X-T10 compresses (or doesn’t compress) files. That said, I don’t know if he meant that in comparison to the X100T or the X-T1 or an X-Pro1 or whatever. Either way, he seemed a little surprised at the very idea of the new camera producing larger .JPG files.

        1. No offence meant to Rico, but the word of an actual Fuji rep is more ‘official’ than anything else. Again, though, I don’t know if that rep was talking about the .JPG size compared to the older cameras or the newer ones. He may have meant the .JPGs are no bigger compared to the X100T, which already is producing larger files, or he may have meant he doesn’t think the .JPG files are any less compressed than the X-T1. (Which is the camera I was mostly asking him to compare to.)

          1. Just because Rico posted it doesn’t mean he wrote it and when viewed in context, it looks like he did a cut and paste from an official Fuji spec sheet

  2. It was really nice of them to release this on my birthday but it would be totally fine to make it available to everyone else earlier. Who do I call at Fuji?

  3. I really wish they’d simply push it out when it’s ready and not stall it until the X-10 release. Providing it sooner won’t dent X-10 sales because it’s a less expensive body! Holding off for the release of a higher end body, or an updated version makes sense, but you’re right – it’s going to be a long month!!

    1. I was using the X-T10 alongside an X-T1 yesterday and the X-T1 didn’t have the new firmware because even the Fuji rep for the UK couldn’t get his hands on it. That, to me, suggests they are not ‘stalling’ but that it genuinely isn’t ready quite yet.

      1. How well does shooting with a X-T1 together with a X-T10 work in your opinion? Are the bodies pretty similar or does it feel like working with two different cameras much?

      2. I would be surprised too if they were simply stalling. Probably testing as much as possible as they don’t really want any of us to brick their X-T1 because of a silly bug. With such a massive update, there are a lot of chances to be in trouble.

In the flesh how is the AF of the X-T10 reacting, had any chance to test it ?

        1. Yup, spent a good chunk of the afternoon with it with many lenses using AF. I did notice it was a tiny bit quicker than the (non-4.0) X-T1’s AF but it wasn’t the kind of difference you’d notice unless, like me, you were literally holding both cameras at once.
The one time it did stand out more obviously was using the 60mm. At regular shooting distances the X-T10 had that focusing just as fast as 56mm, 23mm and 16mm. At macro distances it was also a bit faster than I’m used to on the X-T1. Still a little slower than the other primes, but nowhere near as bad as the 60mm usually is.
Didn’t have any cause to try out the new tracking modes, so I can’t comment on those.

          1. Thanks mate, still it sounds encouraging. Hope the 35mm benefits from the update too 😉

      3. You may well be correct. I hope they release it as soon as possible. I love my XT1, but the AF still fouls up my shot more often than I’d like. I don’t think I ever want to lug around pro Nikon bodies and the associated heavy fast glass again, but man – I miss the consistently precise AF sometimes.

    1. Here’s to hoping, but so far no rumors about an X-E2 update. Will that make me buy an X-T10? Nope, but it will make me a little sad if the X-E2 is officially in the left-behind phase.

  4. Talking to a Fuji rep yesterday, he told me the X-T1 firmware was coming on the 18th of June. Obviously it could get a delay, but considering a rep happily told me that in person without thinking twice, I see no reason to doubt it. In fact I didn’t even think this was a “rumour” at all.

      1. Well, I’ll test it out first for a few hours of course. If there are any issues I’d revert back to the old firmware.

          1. Yup, twice, it worked fine, but not with Fuji. I know there are risks but so far Fuji has a good track record for their firmware updates, I haven’t experienced any issues with the X100S or the X-T1.

          2. I’m a bit concerned that the major release may go with a new bootstrap, so that update might be irreversible.

Sorry for raining on your parade, by the way. Most likely, if I had an event to shoot on 19th, I won’t be able to resist the temptation either 🙂

          3. No worries, I hadn’t considered a firmware reversal failure so I’ll put a plan in place just in case. I might just update one first and see how it goes before updating the second one.

          4. I consider any FW manipulation within 48 hours of a paid gig to be dangerous (and impossible to explain to your insurance company). Some time ago I had a rather scary experience with updating firmware on PCB Einsteins… missed just one simple bit in their instructions. Everything was fine, flashes powered on and off, then bricked. All of them. Three days before the gig, in a country that has no PCB dealers and no adequate rental services. Fortunately, PCB support sent me a custom bootstrap within 24 hours, and my strobes were back in business in no time… But I’ve learned the lesson.

…Nevertheless, I’m not sure if I could resist upgrading my cameras to 4.0 immediately 🙂

          5. Update one of them and let the other with the old firmware. As far as I know, you cannot go back to the previous firmware version. Afterwards, you’ll decide when to update the second camera.

  5. I hope that that timing is correct as it will give me a three week cushion before my trip to South America with my two XT-1’s. I’ll be able to wait a week or so before I update to hear the feedback. Way to go Fuji! I like this way of doing business. Improving on a product without having to buy a new camera. This is my 50th year of being a Nikon shooter. Now my D800’s are relegated to the studio only. Next week will be a year with the XT-1. I look at photos of the gear I used to carry on long (up to two year) trips. Oy!

  6. I think this is a nailed on certainty for June 18th. There is no way they are going to allow the X-T10 to have a better AF system than the X-T1, even if just for a few weeks.
