Ouch! (source: my bank account)
Your Bank account has been right in the past? 🙂
Once or twice, according to my accountant.
I’m not sure whether I want to replace my 18mm with another unbalanced tank but by God that’s a nice looking tank.
This is a lens I have been waiting for. Sounds good to me. Just hope the release date gets it in my hands by June
I NEED (to get another job).
Well it’s on my list, but with this price, I’ll have to double think. This lens is mostly for astrophotography, Rokinon 12mm f/2.0 is only one stop slower but also much wider. However it’s only $300! Actually, I don’t think any APSC prime lens should be worth more than $1000 considering Fuji 23/1.4 and 56/1.2 are both very good and also below the price threshold.
It will be 800 in a few months
So true. still going to get one the first moment i can though haha
does it come with a new sensor?
no, but with new customers.
true, good point
I am guessing 999$ not more than that..not less than that….most photographers would be drooling at this lens at this price…
From compact and not very expensive system Fuji becomes a huge and very expensive one…
With two notable exceptions, Fujifilm’s cameras never were inexpensive. The X-Pro 1 debuted at 1600-1800$ USD, which is the 2nd most expensive non-Leica M mirrorless ever.
The built their name on the retro design and ‘premium’ branding.
Correct, but X-E1 fixed this crazy price.
I am sure this is an amazing lens. Even at 999 dollars – this price is killing me.
It’s too much!! No way I’m buying it for this price. And I have the 23/56/50-140 combo. Better bring it down to 899 if Fuji wants my money. Otherwise for 24 shots I will just use my Nikon D800… It’s even pricier than the new Sigma 24 1.4 art! And it has less glass, less of everything (can’t comment on IQ of course…) Fuji lenses are already pricier than other crop sensor & mirrorless systems. Please don’t start now getting greedy…
They do not dare to set a high price like that
That price isn’t too far off what I paid for a 24mm f/1.4L II back in my Canon full frame days. If true then I’ll wait for rebates. The 90mm will be more enticing for my needs anyways. Maybe Sigma might want to bring their Art series to the X mount by then and add some competition for Fuji.
That’s true and it makes me want to jump back to Nikon and get the d750, as much as I don’t like the thought of doing so. I had issues with every Nikon camera body I’ve ever owned. Planning summer documentary work and I’ll need faster AF and higher ISO capabilities. I hope Fuji decides to surprise us soon.
That’s unfortunate. I had a D2H meter blow while in Europe made me leery of Nikon but I stayed with them till the 5D Mark II. Still though, I think about coming full circle back to Nikon from time-to-time and going back to a two system setup. The D750 seems like a good compromise of features and image quality. With a set of their affordable f/1.8 primes, you can have a affordable but serious system. The X-Pro2 will be the deciding factor for me. I really like the rf style for the reduced size as well as being less intimidating to the people I shoot.
I’m about to do the same. Fortunately I have plenty of good Nikon glass and only need to buy the d750 and sell my d800 😉 because it is just too damn heavy!
with the $300 instant savings on 4/16 I’ll be getting the d750. Don’t really want to but I can’t afford to wait. The X-T10 being released next is the sign that Fuji will milk this sensor until at least Sept. Too bad bc the X-T10 will actually be a good deal with flip out lcd. The weather sealing isn’t really worth it since most lenses don’t have it. Guess I’ll pick that up to replace my aging Ricoh GR.
I have replied to your post to avoid multiple replies, but it is also a response to some of those below.
Not been familiar with US pricing, I looked up the current US price of the example of the 24mm f1.4 you gave and found it is currently $1,549 at B&H, which is just under 50% more.
Also it should be remembered that although the Fuji 16mm lens is ‘equivalent’ to 24mm on full frame, it is still physically a 16mm lens, which is much more difficult to design than a 24mm. A better price comparison is therefore the Canon 14mm f2.8 at $2,100, the Fuji is two stops faster and going on previous experience, will almost certainly be optically superior.
Before anyone comes back with the suggestion that I’m a Fuji employee is disguise, I can assure you I have no connection with them other that that of a very satisfied customer, apart from the fact that in the UK their extended eyepiece cup appears to be as unobtainable as rocking horse manure.
Even it is still physically a 16mm lens, it’s not right, that you should better compare it to a full Frame 14mm lens from a developer’s view. The field of view is different. That’s an important thing in designing lenses (just have a look on your phone’s camera, which has a much smaller focal length, but larger field of view and is by far much cheaper). It’s always hard to compare lenses for APS-C and Full Frame, because most of the time you can’t easily “scale” your optical Design.
“Also it should be remembered that although the Fuji 16mm lens is ‘equivalent’ to 24mm on full frame, it is still physically a 16mm lens, which is much more difficult to design than a 24mm.”
You are 100% wrong in that statement. If small focal length = “more difficult to design” as you suggest then the 4mm iPhone camera lens would cost a fortune!
The Canon 14mm lens you mention has a full frame image circle and a much wide field of view than the Fuji lens. The 24mm Canon is a better comparison, although the Fuji would actually be equivalent to a 24mm f/2 on a full frame camera.
really ?
For some fast lenses (F1.4 or 1.8), some focal length
are expensive to make.
About APS-C, why Canon and Nikon have not create a 16mm or cheap 24mmF1.4 or F1.8 ?
“”more difficult to design” as you suggest then the 4mm iPhone camera lens would cost a fortune!”
You should have a look at the the design of that lens before making that statement 🙂
I’m not dissing the iPhone lens, just saying that focal length on it’s own has no particular relationship to the cost of making a lens.
not on it’s own .. more in relation with the sensor size. bright, with minimal defect wide angle lens is quite evidently more expensive to design than a normal (read 50mm ff equiv) lens
F1.4 is 1.4 when it comes to design specs. “equivalency” has no bearing unless you’re talking about DOF, which is only due to sensor size. So 16mm 1.4 is 16mm 1.4.
My dear, in my day job i get paid the same if I have to execute something easy or hard. It’s part of the job. That’s an excuse the companies made us believe in order to charge more and more money. Open your eyes folks!!!
right price for this type of lens (compared to Canon or Nikon Glass..is “cheap”)
Canon and Nikon AREN’T by any means rule models!!! There is plenty of arrogance and disregard from those two companies. I hope Fuji knows better!!
Ridiculous! The Sigma Art AF 24mm 1.4 DG HSM is in every way a excellent lens for the full frame sensor and cost 2/3 of the price.
Come on Fuji – stop the ripp of or you will fail!
1150? No way I am going to pay that much – I’ll wait till it will be in the rebates.
If Fuji sets it at $1150,- then they make a mistake imho.
For people complaining about the supposed price, wait a few months as most Fuji stuff gets heavily discounted after a while.
Yes, only a fool would buy anything from Fuji within the first 4-6 months of release. Count me as one of those fools when the X-Pro first came out….never again. You know that by Sept this lens will be discounted by $200.
It’s called the cost of being an early adopter. Someone has to pay it or there won’t be mainstream adopters.
About what I’d expect for that aperture on that kind of focal length. If it actually is sharp corner-to-corner at f/1.4, or at least at f/2, then it’s justified. If it’s like most other f/1.4 wide primes which murder the corners until you stop down to f/2.8, then I feel that price tag won’t be justified. (Not that shops will actually sell it at that full price, of course, but it’s not like it will retail that much cheaper, either.) The optical quality right across the frame is what’s going to make or break this. A wide angle that’s totally sharp at 1.4 would be worth twice that.
sharp edge to edge at f/1.4 with little to no coma – THEN the price is ok (I’d use it as my astrolens). If not, the Samyang/Rokinon 12mm f/2.0 does a fantastic job for 1/4 of the price
True, it’s also weather proof as well unlike the other primes. I’d expect this to be another top performer
If it’s more expansive than the Sigma Art, then no buy. It does look this way. I’m ok with paying a little premium. I’ll wait for the Euro price, but I guess I’ll save some money.
Y’all want some bread and cheese with that whine? You want the best, but you don’t want to pay for it. Those who really need a lens like this will pay the price. The rest can use the 14 or the zoom – or the value king – the Sam/Rok 12/2…
I for one find it pricey but not that far off. But still, most fast primes in Fuji lineup are just below that 1k$ mark (except the 56). the hike in price could mean the next versions of the 1.4 primes might be to leave room in the prices range for f2 option of the same focal length.
That’s the problem. People that will accept any price as long it is an excellent lens. This is totally wrong and ruins the possibilities for us consumers. By this pace in 3 years X Photographers will be paying 1600 euros for the next 16mm 1.4 mark ii. We need to make these business people understand that is not just about more and more profit. Because I know many many persons that wanted to buy Fuji and was put off by the prices!! I bet all the future large aperture lenses are going to be all above 1150€ and this is because of people like you that defend charging more and more for quality! 1000 euro is more than enough money to offer top quality! And we are still to learn how these expensive lenses are going to resolve with a 24-28mpx sensor. Let’s hope they’re as good as they cost… I only bought Fuji because I got the xt1 in Japan plus the 23 and 56 lenses for 1000 euro less than in Europe. Otherwise I would have never bought it. It’s far too expensive for a crop sensor 16mpx camera. I got it for what should have been the right price. Last question: if the 24 will cost 1150€ then the 90mm will cost what?? 1300€?!?!
Simple, vote with your wallet.
This is merely symptomatic of the GASsy side of photography. Convince more people that they make good pictures, not their cameras.
People, stop complaining about the price…no one is forcing you to buy it the week it’s released. Most of you should know by now that the lens will be permanently ‘on sale’ with rebates within 6 months of release….I predict a price of $900-$950.
I want to see some Sample images! I Cant wait please keep us posted. It might even be worth the $$$$!!
Because they would prefer you to buy the full frame DSLRs and lenses. They don’t make their best glass for their consumer grade aps sensor bodies.
That’s one thing I love about Fuji, they make great fast lenses for their x series cameras.
Getting back to the lens design discussion. Sensor size makes a huge difference, just look at the Fuji 35mm 1.4 vs the Canon 35mm 1.4, The Canon is much bigger and more expensive, due to it covering a full frame sensor.
“That’s one thing I love about Fuji, they make great fast lenses for their x series cameras.” – Because they needed to attract clients in an overloaded market!!! Not because they are angels! And ALSO because those are the only cameras they have! Haha! And people are starting to get pissed because Fuji will have very soon 3 cameras with the same sensor! Years of recycling! As soon as Fuji finishes their apsc line and decides to go full frame or medium whatever then you probably won’t see their high quality glass on apsc anymore…
if that happens! and anyway by that time aps-c users would already have a full complement of high quality glass for APS-C, something which never happened in Nikon land, despite years of aps-c pro, amateurs and consumer models.
Also flange distance comes into play here.
