Personally I have always thought the lens (17mm) performs very well, and has character.
For my work that needs better IQ, just popping the raw into ACR, quick fix for both the CA and the Barrel distortion. The images look very nice.
As many know, pancake lenses are not for perfection but convenience and this was came as a kit lens.

That’s a weird review… it completely destroys the OM-D whereas most reviews love it…
I was surprised too. Is it really that bad?
He shot and published several shots at f10 and f11. The limit of aperture diffraction on the E-M5 sensor cuts in after f5.6, where you get less contrast and less sharpness. I wonder if that is why he didn’t care for the 45mm it may have shown no significant improvement in sharpness over the kit lens at those small apertures (above f5.6), although I am still surprised.
The review lacks in integrity. Having had the E-M5 for a while now, I cannot see how he could get such poor results. I suspect he was trying to get a bad shot to highlight some “weakness”. The 100% crops looked out of focus. The high contrast shots look like they were preserving the highlights, and not necessarily under-exposing the subject.
The review is one of the more honest ones I have read. The E-M5 AF at anything other than static sucks , and its real high ISO RAW noise without any added noise reduction is pretty poor. The Oly fanboy tribe has hyped the camera beyond belief.
It is a very good camera with some truly excellent features, though the bottom line is that it is less than a stop better than the GH2 a bit poorer than the better APS and well behind the latest full frame.
I love my E-M5 because of the balance between portability, features and image quality.I also shoot with a FF Nikon D800 which regarding image quality wipes the floor with the E-M5, but and it is a big but my favorite 3 lens kit of the Panasonic 20mm, Olympus 45mm and Olympus 75mm gives me great results at a fraction the weight and bulk of my FF gear.
All this BS comparing X with Y is idiotic and pointless . Buy what you want , use what you want and don’t bitch about what someone else chooses. I have stopped taking part in the forums online as so many faboys making crazy claims and trolls attacking them have destroyed what little value they had.

At the rate the EM5 is dropping, you will be able to get 2 EM5s for the price of one GH3.
Dream on. There is no consistent drop in price for the E-M5.
although the specs on the 12-35 are great, and it performs fantastically, it is way too clinical for creative cinematography.
Smear some vaseline on the lens if you want to be creative. Let’s hope for more sub par lenses from Panasonic and Olympus, these really nice primes and zooms have to go!
Here, Here! Enough of this trash! Bring out the 15mm f8!!!!!!!!
hey I am not saying it doesn’t have its uses or that I want worse lenses. but I am just extremely disappointed and bitter with admin for neglecting the glass uberzone mentioned, which would really be just a fantastic all purpose piece.
i will be personalizing mine by rubbing the lens liberally with sand paper for approximately 45 seconds. later i plan to make a cardboard lens hood for my $900 75mm so that my hippy friends don’t judge me.
Well, I suppose that if you are used to the images from your lenses and have to rub sandpaper on a m43 lens to make it match yours that is up to you. Com’on come clean, you only use the box cause others can still see the m43 image is better.
I don’t know about you folks, but in the 12-35 I am seeing plenty of vivid colours along with a lot of blur and not-in-focus shots even in the intended subject.
That was in the first 15 seconds, and I didn’t bother watching more…
What am I missing?
Damn that 2400mm f1,3 is big! Can you imagine it on an OMD.
Wet dream of birders that can MF fast!
It calculates to 500mm f2.8 in FF DOF terms, with 2 stops more light, no?
🙂
I would say that you missed the rest of the video. That you would only watch 15 seconds of it and then spend at least 30 seconds typing out a complaint makes no sense at all…
The video pretty much shows the capability of the lens for video usage. He might of missed the focus on moving branches at the start but after that it was pretty spot on. Oh but you did not see that did you….
The 12-35 is a sharp lens and performs very well for video. The exciting thing for me about this lens is how well built it is and the quality of the image to me at least is very impressive. For us MFT users we can only hope this trend will continue with a 35-100 f2.8. I really want that lens. With both I would have a nice two lens kit with very good range.
The french lens Boyer Paris cost 15 000$ !! But already have 3 offers !!
I’ve got one Boyer Paris 145mm (old and very good enlarger lens from France) and I’ve mount it with a m42 bellows on a Sony A77…and the result is AMAZING !!
I had to mount on a bellows because of the lens have to be far away from the camera to achieved the infinity focus.
Make the focus with the bellows is really sweet (for DSLR video it’s very good to be smooth 🙂 ). The other things is that with the bellows I can focus infinity (and way behond !!) and just by turning clochwise focus on a flower that’s just a 2 centimeters away…so it become a macro lens.
That lens is sharp…how I can say ?? Sharp as Razor ? More than that !! But it’s normal, it’s a very good enlager lens so it have to be good corner to corner, no ?? 😉
Anyway, I will no sell it on the bay…unless for 15 000$ !!
Bye
