Kaizen Again? Fuji X-T1 will get another Firmware update this year! (AS) – Which New Features would you like to get?

 photo FW 5_zpsrmoiwkpz.jpg

According to an anonymous source (thanks!) the Fujifilm X-T1 Kaizen love is not over. In fact, Fujifilm plans to release another Firmware update this year (probably called “Firmware 5”).

Which new features will it bring? This is still unknown, but I hope some kind source can help me out with this soon. In the meantime, you can start dreaming in the comments and in this FXF thread.

To this source: Thanks a lot…. and about the other tidbit you shared, I need a bit of time to check it. If you want, you can contact me via email (fujirumor [at ] gmail [dot] com) to discuss about it (you can create a fake email account, if you want). But even if you use your personal email, I can guarantee you’ll remain 100% anonymous.

If you like the rumor, then feel free to share it on your website (and put a link back to FR)… and if you think it’s just the usual BS (as every rumor I share), just ignore it. Nobody forces you to continuously copy&paste and discuss my BS rumors on your websites (mostly without any link back to FR).

Ok, now I hope I can confirm the rumor ASAP… and any help is appreciated, thanks.

  1. Too bad they can’t increase the MP of a camera! Oh well Im happy otherwise with my XT My number thing is longer glass. An 200 is just a wide angle to wildlife.

  2. Take away depth of field preview from shutter release. The depth of field preview makes the camera lag in low light, e.g shooting at f8 with flash you half press the shutter release and the evf will lag enormously especially in low light

    1. It would be great if you can enable and disable the depth of field preview on shutter release. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I don’t like it.

  3. On a more serious note, I can’t find much to dislike about my X-T1 that could be improved with FW. The only thing I can think of is somehow improve battery life. Apple has been able to do this for their Macs and iDevices.

If Fuji could bring the X-T1 to 400 pics ‘according to CIPA’, so moreless a 15-20% improvement, that would be great as it would mean I could get through most days without a spare.

  4. Second curtain sync would be awesome (not sure if its do-able or not tbh) and would also be great if flash triggering could be synced to the electronic shutter. Either way, i’m just loving that Fuji care 🙂

  5. Firmware 4 was originally intended to be for ‘flash photography’.
I’ll guess Fuji is now preparing for their new flash system and therewith a new firmware release.

I’ll guess if this one rumor is true then this will probably the last firmware update for the X-T1.

  6. instead of releasing compulsively unnecessary firmwares for XT1, which has now reached the hardware limit, because Fuji does not release an update for the X100S. The owners of the X100S feel betrayed by Fuji!

    1. Yes Live bulb would be great!! Almost went with Olympus just for that. And live composite! And figure out how to do it without affecting image quality.

      Also, in random order:
      – allow us to use the side-by-side view to show live EVF and previous image review
      – improve autofocus
      – wider range and more flexible exposure bracketing
      – customize video record button
      – allow to record audio only note using internal microphone
      – allow for more explicit info to be embedded in pic when using dumb adapters
      – allow to add copyright info to images
      – surprise us!

  7. autofocus is still (way) behind the competition, so please fuji, get your algorithms right. a small hope remains 😉

    1. DSLRs have separate, dedicated AF hardware so they will be faster, the other side of the coin is that Fuji doesn’t require you micro adjust the AF to keep it calibrated.

    1. Yes #1
also I wish they add shadow/highlights blink-alert. Those two are the only 2 features I miss on my canon and I wish Fuji could implement them in the next X-T1 fw

  8. In camera HDR sounds good – if technical limitations allow. A better battery level indicator would be important. Better AF in AF-S mode. And one prime lens for free at our own choosing? 🙂

  9. HDR. Or bracketing that you can actually use. I don’t use it, but I know it’s what folks are really wanting.

    1. Yes! Please please please add exposure bracketing up to at least seven exposure values. It seems like one of those firmware upgrades that would take a couple of lines of code and that’s it. Did I say please?

      1. Just to be clear, I’m not asking for in-camera HDR. I like to do exposure blending on my own, but I’d rather not have to take three sets of exposure bracketed images and dial the exposure compensation ring several times.

  10. To be clear, my X-T1 is a better camera now than when I happily bought it, so if Fuji never does anything else to it, that’s fine with me.

That said, I’d like to be able to totally turn off noise reduction in the jpegs, and/or have a x-fine jpeg setting with even better rendering. That’s small potatoes since I’m happy with what I have, but if it could be even better that would be amazing.

  11. Fuji, a faster CDAF like Panasonic or Olympus should be your goal!
As you have a fantastic 56mm lens, your face and eye-detection should be improved!
Finally, Panasonic and Sony have a very nice handheld night shot mode where they stitch several picture together to get a better noise-free image. Fuji has already a class leading sensor in this respect. Let’s improve this more with this “multi frame noise reduction”!

      1. I’m pretty good at detecting faces myself, would rather they spend their time making the camera better at things i can’t do well

  12. My only wish is that they would make releasing the shutter to a half press hold af/ae lock like every other camera ever, and let other modes have the “preview exposure” mode, perhaps after after ae lock. It’s easy to miss things with people if they do something good after your first shot in the current implementation because there’s either a lag between shots with ae lock on or the camera refocuses and remeters with release too half press.

  13. auto focus orientation based on the position of the camera. I like my 6D and 5D III that when I go from landscape to portrait the auto focus point jumps to a predetermined or last used position. I would like the X-T1 to have that feature.

  14. More accurate AF. And more accurate *and faster* AF with single point. Single point still seems strangely slower than zone, when it should also be using phase detect more.

It would also be nice if they could allow “pumping the shutter” without having to focus again (and not having to press the AF button lock). Just like the vast majority of cameras out there.

  15. I would love the ability to turn buttons into toggles rather than yes/no and confirm. Press once or twice and be done with it (like face detection or others)

  16. I would request a simple addition for when we transmit photos via the Wi-Fi feature. I would like to see the “lock” indicator on the LCD on photos we have locked when we reviewed the images. This would make it so much easier to identify photos we want to transmit. Currently, I would need to memorize or write down the file # to ID the photos I want to send. This is OK for transmitting a select few but a hassle when transmitting 10+ photos at one time.

  17. silly whiner, kaizen doesn’t mean ‘firmware updates for everyone’, it just means ‘firmware updates for cameras that are moneymakers’

  18. Am I the only one which minds about the ridiculous NO MEMORY CARD warning?
It only appears for a brief period of time at startup. Please Fuji, make the NO MEMORY CARD warning, big, red and permanent at screen and EVF.
Or maybe this is a ‘feature’ to mimic unloaded film cameras?

  19. I want automatic neck strap adjustment! B-)
Seriously, a few more options for the grid line overlay wouldn’t hurt..

  20. Tweaks to the new focus, the Zone focus works well, the wide a bit hit and miss when things get in the way. Those don’t amount to a whole number upgrade though, someone mentioned already that 4 was originally earmarked for a major flash update and video, although there may be only so far you can go until the new sensor. It makes sense for Fuji to throw everything at the current cameras, including honning button placement and configurations, when they launch the XPro2, up against full frame Sony’s, it can’t suffer from too many teething problems.

  21. #1 – Bracketing +/- 3 stops
#2 – Face Detection CF Button as a Toggle
#3 – Have an option to use the front control wheel as an aperture adjustment (similar to Nikon bodies) instead of using the ring on the lens – I am constantly moving this when I don’t want to!

  22. Please give us 100% zoom when playing back the pictures in raw mode. You only get this with the X-T1 if you shoot jpeg (or raw plus jpeg). My Canon DSLR allows 100% zoom (actually more) in raw and It makes it a lot easier to check that you nailed focus. I know I can get this on the X-T1 by shooting both raw and jpeg but I don’t want to burn up all that disk space.

  23. One more request – intelligent auto-iso, not just a fixed minimum shutter speed. All the information is there to set the minimum shutter speed based upon the focal length and image stabilization capabilities. This one should be pretty easy to implement.

  24. I’d argue that all fuji cameras could use an 4×5 and a 3×4 aspect ratio. East to implement and allows one to compose via one’s preferred aspect ratio. Makes no sense to limit to 2×3, 9×16 and 1×1.

    1. How about doing this in post?
As easy as setting this in camera where you might forget to turn it ‘off’ if you needed to.

  25. 1. Control of ISO with thumb/back or front dial (similar to shutter on firmware 4.0), to finally control camera without taking eye from viewfinder
    2. Improve continuous autofocus while using back button focusing that would lock and not be hunting eternally and never locking to focus.
    3. Improve focus highlight (something easily & clearly visible)
    4. Be able to use back button focusing with face detection if no face is detected
    5. Bracketing of +- 2EV
    6. Mobile Remote App that could control Bulb mode (exposures > 30 sec), not firmware, but anyway

  26. I’d be fine with them calling it 5.0 if it just included an accurate battery meter. As a wishlist, I’d like to see the ability to put ISO on a command dial and reverse the direction on the dials (seriously cannot get used to the fact that the histogram moves the opposite direction to the dials), either don’t touch the video or drastically improve it: pro spec or bust. Weren’t there rumors last year about RAW mode where it actually showed a real preview in the evf/histogram and not just the film simulation? Better exposure bracketing would be nice, and so would some kind of focus bracketing. They could maybe try and do something useful with the WiFi, like tethering? I would really love live overexposure zebras in the evf

  27. The hardware can’t do it, I’d much rather shoot at 200 and pull the file in post occasionally than have to make sure I’m not using a setting that does that on its own every time

  28. 1. Have a full screen preview with highlight/shadows blinkies, and not only blinkies for the histogram view.
    2. be able to set which display mode to cycle through:
    Eye sensor (LCD or Viewfinder),
    LCD,
    Viewfinder,
    Viewfinder+Eye.
I only use Eye sensor and Viewfinder+eye, never the others, so it would be great to disable them and not have to go through all the modes every time. The GUI can be like the review/display with checkboxes in which you tick which ones you want to cycle through

  29. No way, with the aperture ring.
Its one of the best features of the total system.

I’d rather set the ISO with the rear wheel.
imho its much more usefull then assigning the back wheel to aperture.

  30. Hello

Having the LCD and the EVF independent would be nice :

    – Review pictures on the LCD, and at the same time, free up the EVF for shooting.

    – Custom min shutter speed

    – Be able to change the names of the custom profiles

  31. My whishlist:

    1) Be able to set maximum number of shots to take in CH mode
(could do that with my Nikon and loved it)

    2) Be able to control the display mode. (I only use 2 out of the 4 options)

    3) Make ISO 100 a RAW setting instead of JPG only.

    4) Control of ISO with thumb/back dial.

    5) Lock for ‘No memory Card’

(If you can do it for ‘no lens attachment’, why not one for NO memory card?)

    6) High Speed Sync for flash photography

    7) Bracketing -3 to +3

    8) Wifi tethering support for PC and Mac

    9) New Film Simulations: Reala (color slide film) and Neopan for BW

    10) Embed owner/copyright/contact details in EXIF.

    11) In EVF-only mode, display the MENU and Q on the LCD monitor.

    12) Shadow/Highlights blink-alert.

    13) Be able to customize the video record button

  32. First I have to say THANK YOU FUJIFILM! Your FW updates/upgrades are great, best in class! If I could make some wishes…

#1 baster AF in single AF mode
#2 better/faster face and eye detection
#3 options to tweak jpg’s even more (e. g. gradation curve, micro contrast, grain)
#4 Fuji 400H and FP-100C film simulation (modes like strong, light), maybe other brand film like Kodak Portra

    #5 orange bw filter
#6 better noise controlled EVF in the dark

  33. Improved TTL and HSS Support… is the only thing that’s currently interesting. Also because Nissin responded to my question on a High Power di700 HSS Flash for fuji, that it could be one things they will be working on in the future. 🙂

    Reply from Nissin:

Nissin Digital Thank you for your suggestion on making an more powerful flash for Fujifilm system. It may become one of our target that to make a higher output flash with relative compact size.

High Speed Sync support is another popular questions of our Fuji user. The hardware design on Nissin i40 Fuji is ready to support High Speed Sync function, as you will found HSS function on other version of i40. However, High Speed Sync control function is not yet available in Fujifilm cameras. So that we have to wait unit related update to cameras is offered by Fujifilm. So that we have to test this function and provide firmware update to enable this function on i40.

For your information. Due to the hardware design on shutter are difference in Fujifilm X-100 series. The max sync speed for X-100 series can become 1/2000 sec even without high speed sync control.

You may consider to contact to Fujifilm for the detail of High Speed Sync support on their camera bodies.

Thank you again for your message

  34. Auto Bracket 7 steps (the steps can be from 1/3 stop to 2 stops). Have it work with the timer. Click, with timer and auto-bracket and the camera takes 7 bracketed shots. please please please… i said please.

  35. 1) Better battery meter
    2) Clean HDMI Out for external video recording
    3) Improve staircasing and moire on video
    4) Keep Delay Action settings after power off and then on
    5) Label the SD card “X-T1” when formatting in camera
    6) New metering mode to expose for Highlights (like in Nikon D750)
    7) Put card format on simultaneous pressing of 2 buttons
    8) In Menu, add 10 most recently used commands

    THANKS Fuji-san.

    1. Amen on the battery meter. All Fuji battery meters are currently useless. Why is this so difficult for them? They do so many things so well; the battery meter failure really stands out.

That last item on the Menu would also be quite helpful, or perhaps a custom menu tab like Canon uses. The Canon menu layout is the best I have seen – intuitive, logical, elegant, and it remembers what you used last in each tab which really speeds things like formatting etc. The Fuji menu system is like the Sony menu system and they both pale by comparison to the Nikon and Canon menus. I wouldn’t think a complete menu revamp would be appropriate for a firmware upgrade, but the tweak you suggested would be and would make a significant difference in speed and ease of use.

  36. – Built in Neutral Density Graduated Filters.
    – A mode (as X10) for handheld night photography that stack 3 or 4 pics.
    – Another step to focus faster (since it’s not bad at all).

Others that I’ve read before :
    – Shadow/Highlights blink-alert.
    – High Speed Sync for flash photography
    – Be able to customize the video record button

    Thanks

  37. I’ll join in on the people requesting a better battery meter, preferably with the % of life remaining listed.

I would also like an option to see the last image I just took with the histogram, immediately, without having to play back images. I’ve used other cameras that did this, and I found it really nice to see immediately without going into menus that I have the exposure correct.

  38. Having just received today an X30 as a lightweight option to my X-T1 I’ve noticed a few things which would also work nicely on the X-T1. Firstly, the refreshed GUI on the LCD (as well as in the EVF) would be useful, together with multiple Auto ISO settings. As already mentioned, being able to assign the video button as an additional FN button would give that button some use 😉 Finally (and this isn’t on the X30 of course), how about having the ability to name the custom settings banks???? I’m sure there are plenty of others, but I’m more than happy with what Fuji have added since launch, and fully appreciate that some things do need to be held back for the next iteration of the camera. It just seems strange that a 12 month-old compact X has some updated features when compared to the X-T1.
One further thing, if the Advanced Filter options were available when shooting Raw, I would certainly experiment with them, at the moment I just don’t bother.

  39. Just one. Perfect RAW processing in Lightroom/Camera Raw. I don’t care about anything else now, this is BY FAR the biggest impediment to realising the full potential of the system and throws away any benefits of sharp lenses and supposed x-trans ‘sharpness’. Get it sorted, then give us all the other FW updates under the sun.

    1. There’s a fix for this. Set your zoom in LR not to 1:1 but 50%. You’ll never even see the fine detail! The colors, dynamic range etc. are all fantastic in LR, but are taken for granted.

Then, when you export your images, appreciate them as a whole, and try not to zoom in once! I know it sounds impossible. Personally i often export to my screen size, because i know i would be zooming continuously otherwise and forget to even appreciate the images themselves. 😉

  40. – ISO 50 or 100 in RAW possible, useful for long exposures to reach longer exposure times
    – Auto exposure bracketing ±9 EV in steps from 1, 2 and 3 EV
    – better battery meter
    – Bulb mode up to 5 min.

      1. J T you are right. Sorry, I meant T-Mode. Unfotunately most cameras in the world do not support more than 30 or a few of them 60 sec.

  41. – ISO 50 or 100 in RAW
    – Auto exposure bracketing ±3 EV in steps from 1/3, 2/3 and 1 EV with ability to set timer delays between exposures
    – 3 channel histogram option available in jpeg info playback as opposed to single channel in live view only
    – or even better, a true RAW histogram
    – improved focus peaking rendering
    – further improve the foliage rendering in LR and ACR

  42. “Face Auto Release” – I had an old Fuji Point & Shoot camera with that feature. If the camera detects a face, it takes a picture. It’ll keep shooting if there are faces detected. I find this feature very useful.

    1. How do you find this video quality of the xt1? I’m eagerly hoping that the xpro2/xt2 will be competitive with other cameras in the market

  43. If this rumor is true, it sounds like Fuji tries to give the X-T1 another life because they haven’t got the next gen ready, once again. I don’t hope so, since it’s of a major importance to make this system survive. Look how Sony is selling the A7 range like hot cakes. Again: I’ve never been a Sony still camera fan but the rumor is that they can’t even match up with the current demand. That is very unusual in a part of the economy that is full of growing pains, and in fact, only shrinking by the day. For the rest the X-T1’s firmware works fine for me now. It even did before that overhyped FW 4 version hit the web. Ok, the AF is a little bit better but I don’t see the point to add another bunch of complicated functions and options of very marginal interest.

  44. 1) Option to assign the focus assist function to fn button. For example fn1. That makes life easier when shooting with manual (vintage) lenses.
    2) Better highlight peaking.
    3) Focus assist / higlight peaking / zebra striping in video-mode
    4) Option to change ISO settings with thumb wheel.
    5) Cinestyle profile for flat video.

  45. 1. Make the custom settings include ALL controls which don’t have dials, including focus mode and face/eye detection.
    2. Better bracketing.
    3. Enable video on/off using shutter button instead of the silly little red button.
    4. Lower ISO in RAW.
