“If the X-Pro2 and X-T2 were both released tomorrow, which one would you buy?”
X-Pro2… but only if it’s not connected with X-Trans2, otherwise I buy coming high end Sony A7000 or Panasonic GX-8.
I broke down and picked up a used X-T1 that will be arriving today, to replace my x100s. For me, it seems that upgrading to all ‘pro’ glass and the 90mm really makes this a much larger camera and takes away from the economy of scale that Fuji now enjoys (same goes for Sony but most of their lenses aren’t worth the price, unlike Fuji). Therefore, if I go with the X-T1 and battery grip to help balance the lenses then I’m really fairly close to a d750 with a 2.8 lens. I could be wrong but that’s my impression
You are not the only one having this impression. I dont have battery grip but I have quick release plate installed. Weight increased significantly.
A X-T1 body with the battery grip and batteries inside weighs 711g, while a D750 body with battery weighs 840g. The Fuji 16-55mm f/2.8 weighs 655g while the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 weighs 900g.
So you’re looking at 1366g for X-T1 vs 1555g for D750. It’s not that large a difference but keep in mind the grip adds 217g, it would would only be a total of 1149g without it. As such, it’s not a fair comparison to compare a gripped camera to one without one.
since we’re splitting hairs, you need a gripped xt1 to have the same battery life as the d750. Having said that, it’s too close in weight to make a significant difference in size and hence my initial point. But let’s use your approach and compare. I’ll use the tamron 24-70 with VR, it weighs 75 grams less than the Nikon lens and 15 grams less than the Fuji 2.8 zoom. I can and have also used the tamron 28-75 without VR (to be fair and compare Fuji’s non VR lens with a non-VR 2.8 zoom lens). That drops the weight to 508 grams. So, it’s still lighter, faster and has better battery life. But I’m not interested in getting into an internet battle of Nikon vs Fuji. I have my xt1 and I love it, as I expected to. I’m simply saying the economy of scale for Fuji has maxed out with the new larger lens sizes. The point for me will be to stick with kit zoom and some primes for the Fuji. I’ll be keeping the Nikon and 2.8 zooms for sports – best of both worlds. Comparing Nikon vs Fuji turns into apples vs oranges, but it’s about different tools for different jobs. If Fuji tries to become more like Nikon it will weigh like a Nikon but not be as fast as one. IMHO it’s a losing proposition. Once again, I could be wrong but comparing size, weight and capabilities it’s my conclusion. Thankfully, I can keep both rather than try to make one do both. I don’t expect everyone to agree, yet it’s hard to miss the growing size and weight.
Not necessarily, Fuji will improve the speed of the AF with firmware 4.0 without adding a single gram of weight. In my opinion though, they’re not trying to be like Nikon or Canon. They’re giving you the option to use comparable lenses at a fraction of the weight with an outstanding live preview viewfinder as you know. The weight for lenses is something that can’t be overcome because of the law of physics, a f/2.8 zoom lens can only be so small and light before you start sacrificing quality. There’s nothing wrong with them giving people options as long as they continue to improve across the board.
Fanboys…can’t beat them with logic.
You use a very specific combinations of bodies / lenses to make a comparison.
AF isn’t linked to weight (ex : A6000 AF better than A7).
I personally think that Mirrorless auto-focus will be as fast (or faster) than DSLR in few years. Same for FPS, maximum shutter speed… And mirrorless bodies won’t be bigger than today.
Then you could use Fuji (or any mirrorless) for “DSLR usage” too. One system, specialized lenses (fast or compact zoom, depending on your priority).
I don’t want to buy lenses for two systems…
Actually, you completely ignored my point and went straight towards an ad hominem attack without even taking time to consider what I said. Never mind the fact that I own cameras from four different manufacturers. But yes, you can’t beat a fanboy with flawed logic and a lack of reading comprehension.
Your point is that they should just focus on one segment of the market and cater to a specific niche for small and light cameras. My point is that this technology they have can scale really well to slightly larger bodies given time and proper R&D. Yes, it’s not as fast and it’s not as reliable for pro use, but it also has features that are years ahead of what anything Nikon is trying to do.
I never suggested they abandon the small bodies, I hoped they improved across the board and continue to cater to different needs. You may not like the larger bodies but that’s okay because they also have smaller ones, and that’s my point, there’s choice. And in the world of technology, new things are initially large but eventually shrink down as they get refined, so your fears are unwarranted.
sorry, it was 4am and I was reading on a phone, my bad.
I noticed you dropped the weight argument when the numbers came in. Nevertheless, you came across as a fanboy and I called it out. Attacking my intellectual abilities is weak and I would prefer that you drop the attack.
I’d love to see fuji improve and when I was trying to photograph flying seagulls this morning it did ok IF it got focus. My a5100 captured the seagull but then focused on the wrong part of the body. I was wishing I had my d750 with me. In the end I went back to photographing the landscape with the fuji and the ricoh, which leads to my other problem. I have too many different mirrorless bodies with their respective lenses and batteries, all in order to compensate for each other (more likely to compensate for my lack of skill – now there’s something that’s fair game for attack). Maybe I should go back to an x100s and a d750.
I’m going on a month long road trip with wife and kids and I went the xt1 route for all the usual reasons; size, weight and fuji colors. Now I’m realizing (actually that was my main fear) that when it counts, and I won’t be seeing the same sights anytime soon, I’ll be pulling out the Nikon with the tamron UWA zoom. When I’m just walking around with family I’ll hold on to the xt1. The sony is going bye bye and the ricoh gr will probably go as well.
I want an xt2 that focuses like a d750 and prints like a d810. As I said, i hope they make that in the future but my trip is in a month and given how long both sony and fuji have dragged out announcing their new crop sensor bodies, the nikon (a company I very much dislike giving money to) is the most functional and coming along for the trip.
Oh well, first world problems…it’s good to have them.
Fuji is trying to compete with full frame cameras by offering similar image quality and dof. Well the laws of physics tell clearly that if you want a 85mm 1.8 equivalent or 135mm 2.8 equivalent lens it will be just as big if not bigger than a full frame lens. (Looking at 50-135 2.8 compared to the 70-200 f4s). I agree with you that if they don’t offer smaller but also highest quality lenses it will be a mistake. Shooting mainly Nikon, I find it annoying that if I want excellent build quality and the best optics I need to buy the 1.4 primes while the new 1.8 prime set feels really cheep. Fuji seems to be using a similar approach, though the new 35mm f2wr gives me some hope.
Ps: following lens set would make things alright if it would be be well built: 10mm and 16mm tilt shift, 16mm f2, 23mm f2, 35mm f2, 56mm f2 and last but not least a 70mm and a 50-135 f4
Agree.
The good thing about mirrorless is that it CAN be small. Fuji is trying to reach FF-like level with their huge and fast lenses. Using them and a battery grip you won’t be much smaller/lighter that a FF DSLR.
But you only need to use the big stuff when you need it. When you go traveling or hiking just take the small primes and no BG. A D750 will always be big and heavy, mirrorless is only big when you need it.
With mirrorless you can use one system for a wedding and backpacking and don’t need two different systems.
That said, it now is time to complete the small prime lineup. 35 f2 is a start, 16, 23 & 56 f2 should be coming next.
It depends on how you look at it. 1 battery on D750 is about 3 on XT1 in terms of battery life. Lens wise Nikon has many choices too. The bigger difference is in price.
Well the small-prime lineup from Nikon is rather tiny, especially for WA.
You’re right though, if you shoot through several batteries a day the DSLR has a real benefit. Then it comes down to weight-in-the-hand vs. weight-in-the-bag and wether that makes a difference to you.
I am more concerned with size and number of things I carry. Weight is not the biggest issue to me since i tend to use one lens solution.
Similar IQ under decent sunlight. Yet you cant beat a 24MP/36MP with decent lens. Fuji does have good/great optics, but they do not achieve best quality when you count Canon/Nikon lens in.
The big sensor will always have the advantage, but for 95% of consumers aps-c with good lenses has good enough image quality. The same applies to some groups of pros like wedding/reportage/travel etc.
being enough is not a reason to be the “best” and most suitable in one situation or another.

Are the blog and the forum converging? Cause I’ll stop reading this very interesting blog then 🙁
In one year I write about 700 articles, and about 50 will be about interesting threads from the Forum (once a week)… so 7% best of FXF and the remaining 93% are usual news, reviews, rumors, deals coverage… Up to you to decide if that is too much.
Anyway, I think it could be interesting for some to see what X-shooters are discussing over at the Forum… it is at least for me 😉
One post per week is fine for me
I don’t know. I dislike the forum coverage, too. I look into the forum for that. I’m fine with everything else. Just hope the forum coverage doesn’t scare away other readers.
Well, I think critics are normal when there are even small changes on FujiRumors. I remember a strong resitance when we launched the X-pert Corner with Rico, or when I launched the “Top Facebook Images”. But now, both seem to be appreciated by FR-readers.
You know, I could take my time and make a mere “specs-comparison” between X-T10 and X-T1, as done at several other sites, or look for a deal somewhere to post on FR…
… or I can invest my time to collect the most interesting discussions and share the best images of the Forum… and I have to admit, that’s more fun for me.
I don’t know if this will scare away readers, but honestly, I have first to think at what is more fun for me…
It’s becuase of fun and passion, that I launched the Facebook Images Challange, that I went to Cambodia to make the fair trade X-shirts, that I launched a Forum and I share the hottest discussions.
If I can’t do these things, I would probably lose my motivation and fun on FR… and the truth is that, as much as I love FR, I don’t need it at all.
So, at the end, if I run FR in the way I like and makes fun, I’m optimistic that I will be able to keep up writing 700 articles a year…. and bring you lots of rumors 😉
I believe that this blog is running PPC ads, not CPM. So unless you’re actively clicking on banners and referral links, your absence won’t affect anything at all. In short: before making demands at gunpoint, make sure that you’re not imagining your gun.
And I should also make sure I’m not imagining you imagining me imagining my gun…
x200… I don’t need another interchangeable lens camera, 6D is fine for me for what I do if I need to use different lenses.
I see one of my pics in this article 🙂 “hello from Italy pic”
I told you: you share at the Forum, and I feature you on FR 😉
