X100S at f/2: riflessifotografici feedback

[Reminder: At the X100S Cnet review here the reviewer talked about an “almost unusable” lens performance at f/2 for anything closer than 10 feet (3 meters).]

I dropped an email to the riflessifotografici-guys. They are right now deep into the testings of X100S and X20. (on March 11 they posted the X100S first impression here, and the X20 first impressions here). So they are quite busy, but found the time to answer me.

They are checking the X100S “unusable f/2” and compared it also with the old X100 at f/2. According to their first impressions, they suppose that those reviewers who reported problems shooting wide open with subjects closer than 10 feet probably tested a pre-production X100S that may not have been perfectly adjusted.

So far everything seems to be ok. But for the final word we’ll have to wait their full review, where the X100S gets X-rayed by riflessifografici ;). Thanks guys.

  1. I have been testing the x100s out at f2. Would I print a 9×12 image? Maybe not if i’m being judged on the sharpness of the subject, but it is perfectly acceptable for something at 4×6.

  2. I think the people are under pressure, and do their job just to earn the money without passion.
When I read what David Hobby and Zack Arias (true photographers) write about this camera, this is a different world.

Anyone must decide for himself what he needs “a Ferrari for off road or a Range Rover for the city ”

But one thing’s for sure Fuji has changed the world of digital photography and give us back the fun from the the analog age.

One remark more: thanks Fuji, I also found my best software in photography, fortunately, Apple and Adobe was not able develop adequate RAW Converter. I’m really happy with Capture One really the best Software in photography I ever use, it shows the true potential of the Fuji cameras.

    1. try MACRO mode at F2
[admin: I’ve canceled the dp-review link and the “ahuhaa…”, it’s the third or fourth time you post it here. Does it add something to your thoughts if you replicate it over and over? Everyone understood your point of view. You’re free to discuss. And don’t be afraid, in a post with only 18 comments, everybody will notice you also if you don’t howl.]

  3. The pic above shows a nice scene, but the ugly tone mapping ruins it badly. How can any good photographer post such a thing? I don’t understand…

  4. ahhahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahaha There is a thing IMPORTANT: x100s is very bad in MACRO mode at f2. DO YOU REMEMBER?????

  5. “f2 is close to unusable, bad enough that if I hadn’t seen the same problems after looking back at my X100 shots I would have thought I had a defective unit. It’s not too bad beyond about 10 feet, but for anything closer it’s fuzzy in the center with what looks like convergence issues and extremely distorted at the corners of the image. At f2.8 it almost looks like a different lens, snapping into sharp focus in the center; you have to bump up to f4 before the edges are all relatively sharp.”

    LEFT XPRO1 & 35 CROPPED 150%!!!!!! RIGHT X100S NOT CROPPED!!! ahuahuahauha

  6. No problems @ 2.0 and distances less than 3m with my X100s. Must be some issues with pre-production models, or bad QA at Fujifilm (which would be hard to believe).
In fact, the camera would be almost useless for me, if 2.0 wasn’t usable under 3m.

    1. NO, NO & NO I refer at an objective image! Please do the test with your camera posting a SOOC jpg open at F2 of a meter in MACRO MODE …. I wait the test. Otherwise your words has no value against that picture! You can post where you need internet is so big !!!! ahuahuahua

  7. NO PREPRODUCTION , this is the REAL situation, FUJI jere says:
“While adopting a focusing system of a fixed rear lens element group and an adjustable front lens element group, the lens has been designed to hinder the occurrence of “image plane error” when taking a macro shot. However, when shooting macro shots with an open aperture in the neighborhood of F2, spherical aberration tends to occur. It is therefore recommended that an aperture value of F4 is selected for macro applications.”

So this is a declaration.: we have a picture, a declaration against your ILLUSIONS
I wait you for this PERFECT pic at F2 of the centimeter hauahuahuahaua

  8. first of all, sorry my poor english. The x100s is not close, but absolutely unusable at f 2.0 in Macro Mode at really short Distances! We are talking about real Macro shots, not something less then 3m but 10 – 20 cm. In this Distances, the Shot is absolutely soft and looks like a complete unadjusted lens! Stopping down to f4 helps and f5.6 – 8 is pretty good. The Performance in normal Distances unaffected from this problem and very very good!

    1. The issue you’re talking about would have nothing to do with the Fuji lens, at very close distances your main problem will be your depth of field.

Depth of field for 23mm lens and APS-C sensor:

      f/2.0 @ 10cm = 1.2mm

      f/4.0 @ 10cm = 2.3mm

      f/8.0 @ 10cm = 4.7mm

      f/2.0 @ 20cm = 5.4mm

      f/4.0 @ 20cm = 1.0cm

      f/8.0 @ 20cm = 2.1cm

1.2mm is an extremely narrow depth of field. If you are hand-holding your camera it is more than likely you will produce soft (out of focus) images even with the sharpest lens in the world. 5.4mm is a little easier to work with, but still very easy to miss your focus due to your body movement.

Here’s a depth of field calculator:
      http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html

      1. you are out and very WRONGGGGG, see the picture, read with attenctiotn the topic and look at example before to LEARN to US what is depth of field!!!!! PLEASE view the example with 35 & xpro!!!1 Cheers
