Any AF upgrades???
This made me interested (again) to switching one of my EM1 for an EM5II: “Some em5 mkii info not yet shared. Big upgrade to image stabilisation especially in video mode – takin it to the next level. Nothing else like it.”
This gave me doubts if it will worth up/downgrading to an EM5II “Metabones will be releasing new firmware for smart adapters at the same time as the new E-M1 firmware.”
Wow, this is great news that the stellar 5-axis IBIS will be an even greater asset to video users. I hope Olympus can also upgrade their encoding to rival that of Panasonic’s. If their technology is as amazing as they claim then perhaps one day we wouldn’t ever need the use of those brushless gimbals that seem to be all the rage these days. Combine this with a future E-M1 II with internal 4k recording and there would be little need to ever stay with Panasonic. Glad to hear Olympus is finally listening to its video users!
Fingers crossed that it is doing full sensor readout for video, not the usual heavy subsampling.
Without it, product life will certainly be shortened.
Full-sensor readout is the firmware update I’m waiting for.
That is simply not possible. Readout is established in hardware.
So no Speed Booster ULTRA for M43 coming yet?
Not THAT important, as you just use the APS-C area of the image circle / lens. With the full frame to APS-C versions it´s WAY more important, to get better edge and corner performance (and that´s the more or less only difference inbetween the standard and ultra editions). To be precise I even read somewhere, that the older ones are even sharper in the center (but way weaker in the edges and corners) – Compared to the ultra editions.
So absolutely no need for new models ^^.
Maybe you’re right, and from what I know the M43 Speed Booster’s optical design is already better than the original APS-C Speed Booster’s. From several LensRentals blog posts it seems rather clear, though, that Brian Caldwell is working on an improved M43 Speed Booster, too, and there already has been a prototype. It’s just that noone seems to know if it will become a real product, or when…
In your opinion, an improved stabilization system can be equivalent to having a more dynamic sensor or it has nothing to do?
Of course, free hand shots can be improved up to 4 EV in dynamics, if stabilization is good for 5 EV. That dynamic would be even much ahead of a Nikon D750 or Canon 5D III at same light settings.Have a look at >measurements> http://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Compare/Side-by-side/Nikon-D750-versus-Olympus-OM-D-E-M10-versus-Canon-EOS-5D-Mark-III___975_937_795#tabs-2
Stabilization might enable at 6400 ISO a setting of 200 ISO.
Stabilization don’t stop no motion.
I’d love a m4/3 camera shaped like a Canon or Nikon DSLR. Then I could shoot m4/3 without being bullied by my friends in the local photo club.
E-M1 and GH3/4… If you want something even bigger, just add the grips to those cameras. 🙂
Form your own club.
Make friends with mature people.
:)))) good one!
The miracle I’m hoping for is of course fast PDAF with the E-M1, the Metabones thing and Canon EF lenses. If that happens do that I’ll immediately start looking for long white EF lenses.
Not holding my breath though.
You are oing to be a happy man on the first part.
That sounds interesting. Is my 14-54 II going hunt less in low light, low contrast situations on the E-M1? It being a Live View optimised lens it performs much better in those situations on my E-M5 (albeit a little slow to focus). It would be wonderful if CD-AF was optional on the E-M1 or was partially utilised for Live View Optimised 4/3’s lenses so low light or low contrast situations it can actually focus on something instead of hunting so much as it does. It is just embarrassing when pointing my camera across the valley from Govetts Leap (Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia) & the lens just hunts as it tries to find focus on the distant treed valley & mountains when the 12-50 lens can just lock on immediately.
I wonder if we’ll get any large sensor compacts from Olympus? XZ-2 and Stylus 1 are fine cameras, but they don’t compete head-to-head with LX100/RX100 and FZ1000/RX10.
And I wonder if there will ever be a high-end Pen again, a successor of the lovely E-P5 … it would be a shame to have to buy an OM-D to get the latest Olympus tech.
Source 1 = Olympus marketing department – but I hope it is true!
Thing is stablisation is great but if no pdaf focus CAF in video will be poor and manual focus and zoom is not great without tripod. They need PDAF and a power zoom -Sony has this!
Stabilization is a great enabler for budding video shooters and film-makers.
Maybe PDAF is not the future. So why invest in PDAF?
Because the EF lenses are PDAF optimized.
And no other technology can control an EF lens?
Sure. But I’d love the reach of something like the Canon 600 f/4 L on my E-M1, with fast autofocus. Maybe also a teleconverter…
Without providing electrical compatibility between the two, PDAF won’t do you EF lenses any good. The first problem is much bigger than the second.
Huh? The metabones m43 EF already has communication between camera and lens, but no autofocus, and the Sony EF has autofocus, but very slow af. AF should be possible, but it needs some speed to be useful.
Forgot about metabones. But as you say, that’s only Aperture as of now (for MFT). Anyway, I see your point, but using non-native lenses is likely to be inconvenient for some time to come. I hope some day you’ll get your wish.
They already got power zooms….
As for the lack of PDAF: On the one hand this is done to separate the E-M1 with the E-M5 line. Maybe with the new firmware coming for the E-M1, which sports PDAF, we will get the EM5II video features. For photography PDAF is becoming less and less needed. contrast-detection is already as fast as PDAF is SAF and not terribly bad (but not good either) for CAF. With time as processors improve, contrast-detection will also become faster and faster.
It has already been said that the E-M1 firmware won’t incorporate any video improvements.
where?
O mentioned it in reply to someone a few threads back. The one on the specifications leak probably.
I wonder what the reason for not improving EM1 video is.
Unlucky if that reason is hardware capability, insulting if it’s marketing though
Could be the Panasonic sensor in the EM1 isn’t compatible with the changes Olympus made to the EM5-II with the Sony sensor. Could also explain why Olympus decided to stick with the older sensor.
Olympus’ target market is stills photographers, not videographers. Very little overlap between those two markets.
Someone, at somewhere, said something about probable specifications.
😀
O is not just any someone.
That’s right. I’m grateful for O’s factual hints on coming features etc., particularly with regard to firmware updates.
He (or she) is always right.
My four thirds lenses are a lot faster on my E-M1 than on my E-P5 or my old E-M5.
Yes, because they were designed first as PDAF lenses, with CDAF for secondary liveview usage, aka they are not CDAF-optimised lenses.
Olympus power zooms are both crap though!
I agree for still photos contrast detect is good enough, but tracking and video needs pdaf or to be manual focus
“needs pdaf or to be manual”…
Currently, and only for a subset of photographers. To paraphrase what Athonline said, (If) CDAF gets better, PDAF might not be needed at ALL.
They flush the Sony 16-50 turd. What a piece of shit that lens is.
PDAF is not everything.
Sony is not everything.
Hmmm… should Panasonic be willing to share DFD with Olympus?
I suspect DFD is based on chromatic aberration analysis. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to do it and permission from Panasonic is certainly not required.
Amen.
why pdaf all m4/3 lens do not support.
Well at least Olympus had the decency to let Panasonic make some money from the GH4 before stealing their lunch.
It looks like a very capable camera, and I would like to see Panasonic implementing IBIS, but the GH4 is still going to be used for video where the EM-5 won’t. It has 4K, does not overheat / made to be very stable, and it is pretty safe to expect that the EM-5 II won’t equal it in handling, features and codecs, for video.
For photography, the EM-5 seems to be the clear choice..
The stabilization is already untouched by anyone, it already acts like a damn steadycam as is. Any improvements will mean it practically floats around on its own personal cloud directed only by gentle breathing.
Its sad but I wish more than anyone could know they still had a way to attach the sema 1 to the front. Otherwise a one man shooter just trying to collect ambiance and foley etc has to walk around with a stupid microphone that’s bigger than this little camera.
It has mic input.
I know but there is no way to put a small form stereo mic like the one that comes with the sema 1. Putting even a mini shotgun mic is a pain in the ass and you lose the stealth factor.
I wrote a blog post on my site a long time ago about how I customized my Sema 1 for my EM-5. It’s still going strong! Feel free to check it out here if you want: http://thepeaandcarrot.com/omd-on-camera-mic/
Olympus should give their IBIS a name, like their image processor (Truepic). That way, when they improved the IBIS, they just add a number to it telling customers it’s newer.
being able to put a small stereo mic on the front of the camera is almost impossible without the sema 1.
Be creative: http://www.minidisc.org/part_Microphones.html
1) Stereo is just a fad.
2) Duct tape will fix almost anything.
Stereo playback is standard equipment, not a fad
I have two eyes, but just one monitor, I don’t need f**** fads to force to use two monitors and two speakers, thank you! 😛
Figuring out that you are just a f***ing troll by today’s comments from you.
Someone has weak sarcasm radar and should relax a lot….
The new sensational IBIS results are there because the new all electronic shutter with shutter speed up to 1/32000! (FT0.5)
I really, really, really hope it’ll have a silent shutter option.
Would be nice sometimes to get the extra fast shutter speed. But more wanted is in the future the leaf shutter.
But that would not explain why Metabones is applying a firmware update for E-M1, if that has anything to do with the E-M1 and the timing.
Sometimes I just hope that Olympus would add a functions bindable to a button that allows to do two things:
1) Lock the sensor to one focus area, that gives extra stability when camera should not try to even follow user movements. But when the gimbal limit is reached, it would return back to normal.
2) Allow more rapid following of user directional movements. Sometimes its annoying when shooting video panning from one direction and then changing the direction and E-M1 IBIS is like “Oh no you are not going to follow that, I am going to dampen every move to nice and smooth” and you just say in your mind “C’mon! Little less stabilization please!” As the horizontal stabilization for video is nice when knowing that video is panned, but sometimes you need to stop, keep it there and then continue.
No (FT4 or FT5) news about the electronic shutter?
Would LOVE to see 1/16000 or maybe even 1/32000 in the E-M5II.
(One of the selling points for a Panasonic body – I love to shoot 100% silent.
WAY more natural looking pictures – No “forced” posing by the people ^^.)
You could be happy and may be unhappy.
Only a few more days & we won’t need to be teased with your hints. 😉
I have not had any problems from E-M1 being a noisy, weddings, streets, wildlife etc have gone without problems. Try Sony A7 line and you get attention, or get Canon or Nikon and you get that as well.
Sure the totally silent would be always a improvement, but the current shutter noise is exaggeration if being cause for “forced” stances.
If you want people to stay more relaxed, don’t raise your camera on your eye, or do not place hand on the trigger. Instead look elsewhere and aim elsewhere when taking a shot. Or simply use Olympus O.I.S while holding camera on other hand and people believe you are browsing facebook 😉
YOu know I took pics at a concert (just as a patron) with the old EP2, and I became very self conscious. The shutters int he newest cameras are very quiet in comparison to what we have had.
That all said, it’s better to have an electronic shutter as an option. It’s what I also want for the OMD-EM5ii. I do a lot of street photograph and thought the EM-1 shutter is not horrible-loud, it’s still loud enough- ditto if you are shooting in a class music or chorus concert.
I am with you here. I want an electronic shutter option. Don’t mind if it’s 1/8000 or 1/16000.
So, what’s the details on the E-M1 firmware update? Is it going to bring any new features or just be bug fixes?
Just bug fixes, Olympus never add anything or really fix anything. So there is no bugs to fix so no firmware update. It is a rumor after all, and we all know that rumors have no base to exist, like we know the E-M1 4K rumor from last year.
So I probably must be dreaming when I use tethered shooting, in-camera ‘digital shift’ keystone composition, or the Live Composite mode, which have all been added to the E-M1 with firmware 2.0…
No, you are not dreaming, you just forgot to calibrate your sarcasm radar 😉
As everyone knows that there are people claiming that Olympus never add anything (like 0 second shutter shock fix for few people).
I see 😉
.
Not true, there was a basis to the rumor and the guy that released the info was credible and got his hands slapped. All of his Twitter, Facebook and other accounts went dark and a lot of internet clean-up appeared to occur. I would think he broke the NDA and right now probably has a gag order. Also ESOHD got wrapped up in this also. So somewhere along the way someone was telling the truth and was overly excited to let us all know.
If the original info was correct, this would be very exciting for us and Olympus. But typical Olympus, leave it to them to spoil their own success, like the Seahawks just did! We’ll end up with a new “poo” filter and bug fixes that say “improved stabilization”.
I wonder how it could get better. Things that come to mind is improving the slight warping that can happen during the stabilization… and just some general improvements are always welcome. What is amazing is how effective the IBIS has been from day one!
I don’t think they really can get away from the “warping” effect. As it is when the sensor tilts on X and Y axis to stay parallel with the focus plane. But as its only visible when doing very radical and rapid shaking, its not such a problem. Still better than without IBIS. But every improvement, what ever it is, is welcomed.
I was never really very sure of the why, but sometimes it can happen even with small movements… In this case maybe an improvement in the decision making process, or even a setting. YOu know it sounds funny but the IBIS can sometimes be too good, maybe being able to set the amount of compensation?
I have found multiple times Olympus IBIS being too good, in other words I would say “stubborn” to move.
It may match or surpass e-m1 ibis…(nothing else like it) But the latest update may also equalize things.
Both are said by Olympus and Rumor (E-M1 by Olympus, and E-M5 II by rumor) to be worth of 5 stops.
E-M1 has Dual TruePic VII, while we don’t know does E-M5 II have dual CPU or just one CPU. I don’t even know does E-M10 have dual CPU.
We don’t either know do the “improved IBIS” mean it is very new IBIS from Olympus implemented first time to their camera, or is it just “improved IBIS” over older E-M5? Meaning it would be improved like E-M1 has improved IBIS over E-M5 = same IBIS.
If E-M5 II share same CPU (and are dual), same megapixel amount in sensor, same EVF etc. Then it would be interesting if it really gets a newer improved IBIS.
If E-M5 II does get the rumored sensor shift and E-M1 doesn’t, then it must be about newer IBIS as it can’t be only about controller (CPU).
If E-M5 II gets higher bitrate for video and different framerates, then it is strange as same CPU (TruePic VII) is used, unless there is even own encoder/decoder chip.
Where is the information that the E-M1 uses a dual processor?
OK, the processor is multi-cored, but not a dual processor as far as I can tell.
I tried to find a photo of old Olympus presentation box, where the E-M1 was in pieces and each part was marked with labels what is what. And in that it had labeled two processors.
And then there was Olympus presenter video as well that said the camera has two TruePic processors to do different things at same time, like other process EVF while other is recording video etc.
But even then dual-core is usually as well a two processors but on one die, depending how it is designed (does they share cache or do they have own caches).
This video says they added a second CPU to the E-M1 and shows the component in the video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V52U0UhwJuA&list=PLgjOmivD6SMf4SprL3yPar98XV5C9frIF&index=7
Thanks.
I would have thought that would have been more widely know in all promotional material & not something I would have ask about because I haven’t seen that detail anywhere except it was given as a dual core.
I hope there is full-pixel readout in the video (like the Sony RX10) on the firmware update. Higher bitrate and improved 5-axis on the E-M1.
If I did not have that Nikon legacy… Am I right that it does not have an extension port below the hotshoe? I would still like to use my VF-4…
