It’s not a Micro Four Thirds camera but it looks a bit like the OMD and has a very handy 28-300mm f/2.8 zoom. I am curious to see if it will sell better (or worse) than the current XZ cameras. Meantime I updated the preorder link list: Amazon, Adorama, BHphoto, CameraWorldUK (Click on store name to check price and specs).
One more deal info: The $100 off deal on the GX7 is back at Amazon US, BHphoto, Adorama, Samys. And for the first time it’s also valid on the Black GX7 at BHphoto.

Does this mean the XZ line has been killed off, I hope not this new is so ugly, Sony RX10 looking the best bet
The RX10 is a nice looking camera, but it is in a completely different price class than the Stylus 1. In it’s price class, I think the RX10 is as hard to justify as the Stylus is at $700.
Well, to be fair the RX10 brings some genuinely interesting features such as full 5k readout in video, video optimized operation (PZ, declicked aperture, etc.) and weather sealing. Like for all RX models, for the RX10 there also isn’t a comparable model in the current market.
Imo, the price tag of the Stylus 1 is a lot harder to justify, given that it’s just another bridge camera with no special features whatsoever (well, except const. aperture maybe). Btw most probably the original R1 will have much better IQ while costing less than 200EUR.
Did you ever own a R1 to make such a statement? The R1 8 year sensor is not likely to offer significantly better iq and most other important features are very obsolete ( buffer size , cf card). I wish sony would have updated the R1 but the stylus 1 is a better tool in many ways
It’s been quite a while since I’ve used one but in my memory, the base ISO performance wasn’t much worse than current APS sensors. Also, the lens was quite spectacular. I recently met someone still using one and his results were really nice.
I won’t dispute that the Stylus 1 is easier to use, less bulky etc.. That’s the least that I’d expect for the years that have past. But I doubt that it’s going to be better IQ wise, especially at base ISO.
It could be an interessting Camera if there would be a Chance to go down to 24mm !,!!
I don’t Need More than 300mm but less than 28mm.
Sony got that with the rx10
Yes Indeed . But the Sony is amost twice as deep, twice the weight and twice the price than the Oympus
Both are original additions but only the stylus is going to be a coat pocket camera
it will end up targeting two different kind of users but two good additions in the ” relatively small sensors” category

The Nikon P7800 is the closest competition. Both their lenses cover the same range with the Stylus 1 one stop faster on the long end and the Nikon one stop faster on the wide end. The biggest difference is the larger and better quality EVF on the Stylus 1.
The problem is that the Nikon lists for $549 and can be found for less than $500 now. So unless you must have the larger EVF it will be a tough sell for Olympus.
I would agree that the P7800 is the closest competitor but NO , they do not cover the same range. The Nikon stops at 200 instead of 300mm for the Oympus
I also believe that the Olympus offers much more than the EVF as an adavantage . the ring around the lens with the switch is a nice and useful ergonomic touch. The olympus has THREE options to zoom the lens

This camera would have been good five years ago. Makes every Crapnon G series camera look stupid. The market for this type of camera is dead. Crapnon G and Nikon P sells well on brandname and clearout pricing. If this drops to $299 it might be interesting. At $700 it’s dead.
Olympus always seems to be late to the party with their high end compacts. The other problem is they have poor video when compared to their competitors. Video capabilities are important to the P&S crowd.
Hey Olympus, how about a price drop on the E-M1 and get rid of the stupid rebates.
$1200 for body
$2000 for body and 12-40mm pro lens.
What’s the point? It has a tiny sensor. For the same price you can buy m43 with almost the same size and all quality and flexibility it brings to the table.
$700 for a 1/1.7″ sensor, fixed-lens camera? I just can’t imagine the scenario where that does well for Olympus, though this is totally not the camera for me at any price.
I’ve had this camera for a year or so. It’s called the Panasonic FZ200. 28-600mm f/2.8 lens, flip out screen. And I paid a hell of a lot less than $700.
I forgot. It’s actually a 25mm to 600mm.
The Panasonic is cheaper and offers 1080p at 60 fps + better bitrate..
And the Pany sensor is even smaller.
It is kind of the late successor of the old Fuji sd6000 … most specs seem right : 28-300 equivalent , nice viewer and tilting, screen , 400g including batteries, etc.
But the price is just too high unless the lens and sensor are surprizingly good … but just don’t expect M43 quality. $500 at first and $400 later would be more like it .
I had Kodak with 1/1.7″ sensor. It was less than $200 with all discounts and much lighter and smaller. Nice colors, but not so nice IQ. IQ of 1/1.7″ was the only reason I switched from P&S to m43. If you want P&S – Kodak was much better choice than Stylus 1 – tiny, cheap, disposable and made decent photos. I did not understand (and still do not) the point of P&S Canon which cost too much for the results you get. iPhone is the ideal P&S – Kodak moments for essentially free. Also serves as a flash-light, magnifying glass, navigation system, computer game console, video-phone, audio/video player, TV/radio, encyclopedia, web browser and on and on depending of downloaded apps.
While this camera has a larger sensor and is smaller than the Panasonic FZ200, the price is a no go. I thought this might be a replacement for my Fuji F770 since it’s not much larger, not at this price.
F2.8? Really oly is that the best you can do? My old and trusty canon s95 does f2.0 and the s120 does f1.8. This is a sham for hipsters.
it is infinity better than S120 at 300mm
Are there any news on replacements for E-PL5/E-PM2 and E-M5? These cameras have been around for a while and the prices are going down.
Do you think this Stylus will have better IQ than the Pentax Q7 with its kit lenses?
My gut tells me that the Olympus will have better IQ because of newer tech + magic sensor tweaking + integrated lens, but I am just trying to talk myself into a Q7 as a fun backup : )
The Q7 was a flop so heh…
Ya, so which flop do you think will tale better photos? The old one or the new one?
Woww how u dare to compare a small & tiny
Canon s95, sure u know the zoom is 3x
Doesn’t have viewfinder, no tilt screen
and small manual features, I have a lot of cams, but this is the first IZUIKO 28-300 LENSES, so it would be awesome I canr wait to see the reviews, PLUS it would be the 1st compact camera with a decent VIEWFINDER, ‘cuz with my fuji x100 is a love -hate relation on the viewfinder because has a lot of lag & is damn slow!!!
The price mmm for me its ok, there is no camera with such a viewfinder – sensor & optics!!!
& im a cheaf of photography in a photography store!! So a tested a lot of cams
PANA FZ200 – tiny sensor, plus olympus in colors are awesome and toy viewfinder
Sony Rx100 – (f1.8 but then 4.8 !!) no viewfinder small zoom
Canon G15 – poor zoom, tiny sensor no viewfinder
OLYMPUS M4/3 good cams REALLY GOOD (I LOVR MY EM5) but if u want a good zoom sure is posible but it would cost more than 500 € and it would be huge!!!!
PANA LF1 small &cute but small sensor -poor zooming & toy viewfinder
Etc etc etc
So I just wanna see the IQ, if is better than my xz2
It would be mine!!!!
So is this a point and shoot or a bridge camera?
It’s pretty much an XZ-2 with a viewfinder and more zoom, its targeted toward enthusists. The smaller size compared to some big zooms may win it a few fans with the point and shoot crowd though (but really, there are more appropriate models for those folks).
