    1. there is only 8.55mm difference between M43 flange and Leica M, I would not hold my breath for a speed booster, it wont fit.

      1. What’s Leica M got to do with Micro 4/3 or M42 screw mount?

        M42 flange distance: 45.46mm
        Micro 4/3 flange distance: 19.25mm

Plenty of space for a speed booster.

    2. Since M42 is longer than FD, all you need to do is buy a M42-to-FD adapter (on eBay for $12-14) and the FD Speedbooster will work for all of your M42 glass.

  1. Is thee any FD glass that is as sharp as current lenses?
With the Canon 50mm f1.4 I get a soft image and purple fringing.
The many Sigma, Tamron and Canon FD lenses I got when I started with mFT aren’t any better.
Not a single one compares to a Pan/Leica 25mm f1.4 even when heavily stopped down.

    1. I had the same problem with using cheap adapter, since buying the kipon version I have no more soft image on the gh3.

      1. Shouldnt even a cheap adapter have at least the center point in an image perfectly sharp even if the focal plant is tilted in both directions?

        1. those lenses are good… but not up today standard … the lenses cannot cope with number of resolution of the m4/3 cameras… but i believe is still great to use it for video shooting where sharpness not really matter much anymore… but sharpness is kinda of overrated too if you printing in smaller sizes or uploading it internet.

    2. Your Panasonic 25mm’s sharpness peaks at 74 lp/mm @ f/5.6.

      The Olympus 75mm f/1.8 (considered the sharpest native lens for µ4/3) hits 82 lp/mm @ f/4.

The Canon FD 55mm f/1.2 Aspherical (release in 1971) has been measured at 154 lp/mm wide open @ f/1.2 and only gets sharper as you stop it down.

So yes, the FD system offers sharper lenses than your 25mm. Your soft results are most likely about your ability to use manual focus lenses effectively. I use a nFD 50 f/1.4 all the time and sharpness is never an issue; it easily matches the Olympus 45mm f/1.8 while offering much more natural colours.

  2. ahhh FD 85mm f/1.2….if you only were a little bit cheaper…. 🙂
(greetings from my air-conditioned hotelroom in Jakarta, after completing my mission with two completely different models, Aneu & Chacy)

  3. This news seems to cause a traffic jam at the metabones site. I wanted to find out if it’s a new optical design, and if the available reviews are also valid for this new adapter. But anyway, interesting news indeed, i guess i can finally start looking for an m42 to FD adapter.

        1. if that was the only reason, then why did Metabones and the optics designer clearly said that the m43 version used a redesigned optical setup for better performance then the APC version. They could have used the APS version instead with a m43 mount instead of goin trough the efforts they did.

          1. Well, I didn’t know they said that, but that sounds like we can expect an even more serious improvement.

          2. It was mentioned in one of the online pdf files at the Metabones site I remember. And there is one ore more test(s) floating around about the improved edge performance of the m43 version. I also remember that the poor edge performance of the aps version was not caused by the legacy lensed used.

  4. This could qualify as the most versatile Speed Booster, since you could put adapters on it for mounts with larger flange distances, especially EF, M42 and K.

    1. EF has a shorter flange distance then FD.
That’s why an EF camera to FD lens adapter contains a lens.

  5. And what about the, previously “annonced” OM=>µ4/3 Speedbooster ? I sold all my FD and kept only OM lenses 😀 By the way, the Zuiko 50mm f/1.4 is better than his FD cousin.

  6. The Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 lens with Canon mount should give a 25-49mm (equiv FL) f/1.2 lens when used with this adapter on M43 cameras, right?

    Would it work?

    1. No it would not work, because this is Canon FD mount adapter, not an EF mount adapter.

But if you buy a Nikon-mount lens and adapter, then rhat may work as you have calculated. (However it is not a full-frame lens, so it may vignette … )

  7. Damn, I’ve been screaming for this since they announced these adapters. Guess I’m finally going to have to put my money where my mouth is. My FD L glass thanks you Metabones.

  8. What I’d love to see is one of these with AF.
Something like the old Nikon TC16, or the pentax 1.7x TC, but with the 0.7x ratio.

A semi AF system for old MF lenses.

    1. +1 on Minolta MD. I ordered one for my collection of Minolta MD lenses. Many are complaining that these old lenses aren’t comparable to the modern native lenses, and that is true; they have something unmeasurable in the character of their rendering. One does not need nor want extreme sharpness for people photos and neither for videos. I can’t wait to have my Minolta 58/f1.2 with this baby.

      1. Interesting thanks. Hopefully is better than their Light Cannon 0.72x v1 (I haven’t seen the v2 though – was it better?)

          1. Problem isnt that much in glass (they buy that from companies which make them – Hoya, Schott etc.), problem is in design and manufacturing tolerances. Making good 0.5x compressor is really hard (and reason why Metabones didnt make it).

Such compressor is built-in in numerous 4/3 lenses from Olympus and obviously it works very good, but its design is different in each lens, making “one size fits all” isnt possible. Its always a compromise. Reason why regular is “just” 0.71x is that its probably best compromise and it allows various lenses to be used.

Sure Leica or Sigma if they wanted could make one, that would probably blow socks out of Metabones. But they wont, so lets hope Fotodiox will produce something at least usable (Light Cannon isnt really). Metabones could to, but I think they simply dont release something too compromised (or too expensive, which is what it would be probably..).

  9. This is fantastic news! I can’t wait to increase the focal range and widen the aperture on my large collection of Canon FD lenses. Not to mention, the ability to change the Micro 4/3 sensor in my GH2 to roughly Super35mm. I think it’s safe to say that I’m now out $400, but I’m not complaining, I’ve been waiting too long for this adapter!

    1. You already have “roughly Super35mm”

      FT:
      17.3x13mm

The GH2 has a multi aspect sensor and in 16:9 uses:
      19mm x 10.7

      Super35:
      24,0×15,2mm (without audio)
but a widescreen image uses only
      11.3mm

      1. The GH2 sensor is a 2x crop from 35mm full frame. What I meant is that after using the Metabones Speed Booster Canon FD to Micro 4/3, the focal range of the lenses and sensor would be changed to 1.42x crop, which is much closer to the 1.5x crop of Super35mm.

        1. It is 2.0x at 4:3 but has 1.86x at 16:9 because of the multi aspect sensor.
          (Contrary to the GH3)

          Super35 = Film = running a 35mm film vertically through the camera.
35mm “full frame” is a photo format = running a 35mm film horizontally through the camera.
          That’s a huge difference.

  10. I checked the listing for the Canon FD to Micro 4/3 Speed Booster on the Metabones website. It doesn’t say anything about a preorder. The quickest shipping is 2 days to the U.S. through Fedex. So, could I possibly receive it by early next week? If it is preorder, has the 43rumors site heard about an earliest estimated date that Metabones will ship the adapter?

  11. Metabones now updated their site as of 30th Oct 2013 to say this Canon FD to m43 adapter is NOT compatible with the Oly OM-D EM-1. Yup go check it. Have had to duplicate this message at several threads!
