Panasonic Lumix GM1: la más pequeña from QUESABESDE on Vimeo.
It is really no surprise to see the new Panasonic GM1 lead the Amazon mirrorless ranking (Click here to see the list). Now let’s see how long it will remain there. Back to news:
The Spanish friends over at Quesabesde made this nice video presentation of the GM1. A must see if you speak spanish (or just want to watch the camera in action).
Updated preorder list:
In US you can preorder the GM1 with lens at GM1 with kit lens at Amazon, Adorama, BHphoto.
In Europe at Wex Germany, Amazon UK, Fotohanskeuzekamp, Cyberphoto Sweden and Wex UK.

That brown leather (or fake leather, whatever) looks pretty sweet.
agreed. Sexy cute little thingy. Hmmmm
Somehow reminds me of the very first Olympus Pen Mockup:
http://www.techchee.com/2008/09/23/olympus-micro-four-thirds-camera-mock-up-to-see-you-at-photokina-2008/
I love the camera…but that version is not something that I can look at for more than 5 seconds. 🙂 Sorry.
Way, way back when, a friend of mine took a camera repair course, and the disassembled in Fuji SLR, painted all the bare metal parts white, and replaced the black leather with green-died ostrich skin.
Would you like that better? 🙂
Look..I am pretty open minded….I actually REALLY like the white camera but with a black lens (not silver) and the black auxhillary grip. That would be spankin cool!!!!…..but this faux leather-look think that would be in the purse of a woman I would NEVER date is really FOUL!!!!!!! I mean that in the nicest way possible. 🙂
whats wrong with faux leather if we have faux rangefinders and slr designs?
Brown? you using a Mac?
Well.. this camera is growing on me. It does some basic stuff, but it seems to do it well, and in a quality package too.. and it’s not that frequent that the provided battery charger is bigger than the camera itself!
I wish the gx7 looked that good! this little guy shows Panasonic can make drop dead gorgeous cameras, and not just be another “electronics brand”.
Maybe the Fuji partnership has something to do with it?
it could because it looks a lot like the XF1
Yes! Sony and Oly should learn from Pana and Fuji how to make charming, artful, & stylish camera rather than awkward DSLR shape.
If only the partership leads to a µ4/3 X-Trans sensor 🙂
I think they have an organic sensor in the works, I don’t know if it’s Panasonic or Fuji or a collaboration, but give it another year or two 🙂
“Una camera … muy pequen’a” (that’s the only thing my very basic Spanish allowed me to gather). It’s irresistibly cool, I have to agree. I wish it had tilty screen, GPS and IBIS, but at that price and size it’s good enough all around and definitely a very competent match for any m43 pancake lens.
I must know more Spanish than you. I understood “Lumix” and “iPhone cinco”.
The guy speaks quite good about the camera. First he starts by saying he’s quite surprised about the size of it. He admits he’s not a fan of miniature cameras, but he admits that this one is a sexy looking camera, and that while sacrifices have been made to make it this small, the ergonomics are quite acceptable for the size.
When he puts it in his pocket is when you see that the lens (actually the lens mount+lens) don’t quite go well with the tiny body.
In his conclusion he says that in the end having a m4/3 mount doesn’t really matter, since it’s all about size (meaning -I guess- that you won’t want to use this camera with bigger lenses available). But then the question is: why not make this body without a m4/3 mount and put a fixed, fast prime that would make it really pocketable and cooler to use? (some f/1.8 is always much cooler than f/3.5-5.6).
What about the upcoming 15mm 1.7 from panaleica?
I would like to know the size of this 15/1.7…it look like 17/1.8.
Thanks!
I think the upcoming 15mm would be sweet on this camera, especially since it has aperture control on the barrel, so you wouldn’t be given up direct control of the aperture. The one dial on the back could be set for exposure comp or ISO. Perfect little street camera when you want to go light.
Thanks!
It’ll look great with my ZD 35-100mm f/2.0. I’m just not sure where I’ll put the camera body in my bag–it’s so huge.
Great looking cam. I think the current Panasonic touch interface is responsive enough to make the lack of manual buttons and wheels much less of a concern than it might have been in the past. The 24P video should make this a good backup cam for filmmakers who want something pocketable that can take quality behind the scenes stills and videos on set (I assume the quality of this cam will meet or exceed the G6, even at the std 24Mb/s bitrate). At least that’s how I plan on using mine.
it looks like a toy in his hands…
That’s the idea. It’s a wolf in toy clothing.
it’s a girly camera. real men get gx7 😉
Yeah, but the GM1 may help you get the girls.
Didn’t the mighty Terada say that girlies are the main market for mFT
Wake up boys , World is girly since many wear ago.
Only the GF series. (after GF1 that is)
Fixed.
The GF2 still had a Hotshoe. That should count for something.
And the GF6 has the tilt screen (what did not increase the size much, comparing to GF5)…
I thought GF stands for girlfriend 🙂
Nah. Real men use a GH3.
Or a Leica S. 🙂
and drive Hummer ? 😉
You need a Hummer if you have a Canikon system.
The Sony A7r is number two camera on the all digital camera chart 32 spots above the GM1 , maybe they don’t know its mirrorless

Never pay much attention to the Amazon product rankings. One of the major criteria for the product ranking is the profit margin. Many new products get their place in it while offered at the the MSRP, since that gives to the retailers the highest profit margin possible.
To put those Amazon overall camera sales rankings into perspective yes a couple of the latest Sony A7R were near the top but most of those ranked ahead of the GM1 were fire sale compacts $50-200 or DSLRs with only +/- 6 higher priced DSLR models (including A7 models) and 1 compact RX100 ranked ahead.
The GM1 looks so tiny in the video.
speaking of larger lenses – maybe my expectations were low, but seeing it with the 75mm doesn’t look too bad: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ralfs-foto-bude/10326512323/
Thanks for sharing, this was the number one lens I had in mind. And I agree with you, it doesn’t look so bad. But maybe my standards are too low -LOL

LOL, looks like a NEX with a kit lens!
I speak spanish and have a hard time understanding him, he talks fast as hell
The 12-32mm doesnt have a focus ring
That’s right. But check the German video below around 6:40 where the manual focusing via the touchscreen is shown. With focus peaking via a scroll bar on the right of the screen.

I think the 14/2.5 pancake will go even better with this camera for a lot of situations. It’s probably the smallest M43 lens available.
Aside from the Olympus Lens Cap, of course, that should also be interesting with a such a small body.
The 14mm isn’t that much smaller than this zoom: http://camerasize.com/compact/#491.397,491.5,491.30,491.93,491.346,ha,t
I was thinking more about discreet / street photograpy. Not only the pancake is 20% shorter than the zoom at rest, but it’s way shorter when in use.
The 12-32 doesn’t look thst much larger than the 14mm pancake and i doubt the pancake is so much better optically, i was never impressed by the sharpness of this lens. the only thing you gain is 1/2 brighter aperture
It would surprise me to see the 12-32 sharper at 12mm than the 12mm lens. The 12-32 MTF chart looks great at 12mm.
This camera is Ridiculous (In a Good Way) and I’m surprised it took so long for Panasonic to make it. Many people chose M43 because they sacrificed IQ for Size and it’s paying off in a Big (in a small) way. This is a nice 1-2 combo with the GX7 for my street photography.
But, I’m not going to make the same mistake as I did the GX7 (silver black body), I’ll wait for the all back version.
I fear the black version will not hit our US stores. Panasonic marketing in US is awful (and then they complain they don’t sell m43 stuff: I claim that they don’t even try!)
See the conclusion from Tom Hogan: http://www.sansmirror.com/newsviews/panasonic-gm1-likes-big.html
I disagree with some comments that this camera is good for the street photo. With fixed screen the shooter is always limited by the eye level shooting only what is not nice for the street photo.
A good street shooter will shoot from the hip, hence the favour of the wide angle lens for this type of work, as long as the camera is directed in the right direction. I often shoot with my camera on a table at a street cafe, focus set to manual small aperture, just press the shutter then edit out the foreground if you wish.
What you describe looks like a sort of “masochist’s street shooting” :). Sorry, but I prefer to control the composition by eye in the moment of shooting rather than to rely on wide angle/cropping. Just to illustrate my point, look at how this toll Catalan guy on video sometimes comically bends/shrinks to achieve the right shooting point 🙂 .
And as I commented before, there is almost no compromise in size in the same models with vs without tilt screens: GF6 vs GF5, RX100 vs RX100 II etc…
Since when do we have to look at a screen to compose a shot? Especially on the street? Half the time I dont have the time to put it up to my face, let alone look at a screen, angled or not.
Since when do you need eyes to compose a shot, especially on the street ?
Order from Canada, it’s easy!
I got my black GX7 +20mm kit from Aden Camera. It was even a bit cheaper because of the exchange rate.
Imagine, the US-Canadian exchange rate actually favors the US dollar again!
I’d have said that this one doesn’t offer any real value over the PM2 until I saw the max ss of 1/16000. Really excited about what people are going to do with it. If I recall correctly, this should be the first consumer camera ever offering this kind of speed.
Orange, pink, green cameras = fugly.
That’s your opinion.
Here’s mine:
n3eg = fugly
My favorite part was when he said “it’s almost pocketable” then does the same squeeze dance I do with my ep5 + 20mm. Sure it’s doable, but not super easy.
“lead the Amazon mirrorless ranking”
Well it’s nr. 4 now, this means nothing without data of actual number of pre-orders placed, maybe 7 people pre-ordered, maybe 70 who knows?
what is the next olympus cam ?
still m4/3 of FF follow by Sony!!!
It’s seems that the camera have an electronic level (at 3:33), it’s great.
I am wondering who will buy this toy in Spain with its 50% unemployment for youth…
The main target of this camera (from the ergonomic point of view) are those who bought stylish compacts before.
…stylish compacts with the fixed screens
THIS IS SO FUNNY SHEEP JOKE!
The g6 is about 500,-$…price falling but all want
the same other thing because it looks older… fot
1000,-$
the joke of the day……harhahar….hhhhhhhhhhhh.. har
You must be no older than 16…
Not sure if I can combo with 20mm f/1.7, but put the body in one pocket (jeans) and 20mm in another. Not sure if it is going to be small enough to walk around?
e-pm1 + 14m f2.5 on jean pocket right now
I am still amazed at just how small this GM1 really is. For comparison I took out my small travel cam a TZ5 and was shocked to find the GM1 body is actually smaller in every dimension with just the right depth for a good grip. Also noted a mockup someone posted on DPR showing what a GM1 with Leica 12-50/2-3.5 lens would look like not bad at all. So now I can have a travel cam in one pocket for 12-350mm and a GM1 with a 20 or 15mm/1.7 in the other or just the GM1 with 12-62 zoom and 15mm/1.7, and coming 35-100mm or exiisting 45-150mm in other pocket.
Would like to use the GM1 with some serious telezooms (100-300 and 35-100 F2.8), but this might be a bit unbalanced. The German Youtube video (Ralphsfotobude) shows the 100-300 attached to the GM1… Now my question is : which other Oly/Pany small body would deliver similar performance (due to similar latest tech sensor etc) but is just a bit bigger than the GM1? Also, I am a bit confused..the 35-100 F2.8 has the Full Frame euivalent focal length of 70-200 due to the 2x cropfactor. But how to calculate the equivalent aperture, I heard this is worse than 2.8, i.e. there is less light capture vs a FF 2.8 lens. Hope someone can help out. Thanks.
F2.8 is F2.8 – end of story
DOF (depth of field) is bigger with m43 by 2 stops – so somewhere around F5.6 (or a tiny a bit lower).
NOW, if both sensors would use same technology and same megapixels – it would matter and F5.6 in 35mm terms would not sound as exciting. The thing is, smaller sensors perform better all the time (just look at mobile phones, tiny sizes and ISO performances) and have less megapixels, so the ‘bucket and water’ equivalent doesn’t stay long with full-frame fanatics.
Thus it’s not true that what you shoot at ISO200 on OM-D EM-5 you can easily shoot on ISO 800 on Nikon D800 (you need that with F5.6). Or even worse, ISO1600 on OM-D and you ‘beat it’ with ISO 6400 on Canon 5D MKIII. You don’t – you get MUCH WORSE image. And then there’s optical stabilization (marketing 3-4 stops) which with primes will buy you another ISO shift…
F2.8 is F2.8 end of story – increasing ISO not only brings more noise but dynamic range is lowering significantly thus those full frames don’t look so nice anymore
just look at new Sony 7 series joke, primes have no OIS and are one/two stop slower than primes on m43 with OIS. You get insanely high megapixel count. What good is a full frame then? I bet you get THE SAME IMAGE (with skillful hands) with m43, if not better, with cheaper and lighter kit. Not bazooka F4 ‘carl zeiss’ lens.
m43 can’t be beaten, it’s not a CAMERA (ergo TWO choices, D600 or D800, not counting behemonts D4) but a SYSTEM. tiny cameras (GM1), small compact ones with viewfinder (GX7), pro ones (EM-1) or stellar camcorders (GH3). THE SAME (stellar) LENSES.
in other words, F2.8 is still F2.8 everywhere if there’s no cheating on ISO values (which usually is – each company has its own interpretation of ISO)
This really is a poorly thought-out product. Obviously, it’s not going to be sold to the average P&S crowd, because they already don’t care about, and don’t need a camera with interchangeable lenses. So, the market is just the enthusiast crowd. However, offering something so totally devoid of control and manipulation is just awful. They could have and should have added a control wheel around the barrel mount, like the Canon S-models and the Sony RX100. Then, an actual degree of control could be issued over things like, oh, aperture, shutter speed, or (gasp!) focus.
This is a giant step back from the original GF1. Smaller? Yes? But also entirely less usable in every conceivable way.
why so critical? I kind of like it. I used to shoot RX100 and control wheel been a gimmick there (you needed twice to alter a value, once to display it on LCD, wait one second, and 2nd time do alter it – awkward).
THE ONLY BIG design fault is MF/AFS/AFC switch – OMG why they didn’t add exposure wheel there? NOBODY is going to use MF with this kind of camera (critical focus on a LCD? give me a break) and I have NEVER used AFC on my EM-5, as it never worked correctly (not even with vivid mode trick on dpreview forums).
So this switch is totally useless, but looks amazingly positioned to exposure wheel. Now the back wheel would control the aperture and I’m set for shooting with better options that NEX system offers (one wheel only most of the time).
This is nice sweet compact camera that can shoot great pictures in bar (20mm F1.7) where all the others can’t.
Disagree completely – this is a very well thought out camera for those who are used to framing onto a screen and are happy to have minimalist physical controls in exchange for high IQ and portability – a camera with much greater scope than the RX100 II – the GM series of lenses will be designed for portability – I’m ordering one for my wife as an upgrade to her Lumix compact – for me a GX7 as my “go-to” camera to utilize the many m43 lenses I now have. Good on Panasonic.
Sorry, but that’s not an entirely believable scenario. What in the world is someone – anyone – going to be doing with an expensive, interchangeable-lens camera which lacks even the most basic photographic controls? Entirely contradictory. Having used the Sony RX100 and Canon S models, I know there is very good quality there. The slightly larger m4/3 sensor has the ability to theoretically deliver some better IQ, but again, not of the photos are harder to take. As small as they are, at least the compact P&S cameras I have mentioned have much more immediate control over absolutely critical features like aperture, shutter speed, manual focus, etc.
The controls are all there – they are mostly touchscreen, not physical switches, although key physical controls are not really lacking (recording mode, focus mode, function key, video, playback, menu keys etc). So, no compromises on functionality (excepting lack of hotshoe) with excellent portability and lens choices. When we go cycling or hiking, the GM1 will really shine.
I haven’t found any mention so I suppose this can’t control wireless flash such as FL-600R with the built-in small flash?
