    1. Why is that? At $700 it already competes with discounted NEX-6 and various junkrebels on price, while having much better controls, metal weather-sealed body and IBIS. E-P5 and GX7 look even more overpriced in comparison now.

    2. hey…the OMD is as good or better than the GX7 for IQ..and it sounds like the new $1500 hybrid will not have IQ that is really any better than the original OMD…I am happy…cause I am really not tempted by any of the new MFT cameras at the prices they are coming in at…so…at $700 the original is a very good price…hell it was good at $1000.

      1. Indeed, I got an E-M5 for 850 a few months ago, and I am still v. happy with it. Yes, there will be refinements in the coming cameras, but the IQ won’t change. So the price hiking of the latter won’t make you happy.

    3. I have to agree. Olympus could dominate the market, but their prices are too high. As a previous owner of the OM-D, I felt the camera was good, not great. I think $500 and the camera would actually be at a reasonable price point and sell better.

    1. Phew! Also sold my E-M5 as soon as I saw what Panasonic had done with the GX7. The GX7 has Olympus panicking something crazy. Their models are depreciating in value by the minute.

      1. Those models surely are. GF5, G5, G6, GF6. I know someone that bought the GX1 with kit zoom for $1199. Imagine that!

  1. well… at the current rate, that would be ~530€ …. G3 with the 14-42mm is at 533.77€ in my country… shame that shipping and customs would make those 530€ into 900€ or more…

    1. NewEgg also has the white and silver E-PL5 for $399. I ordered the silver last night before this story appeared. Now it seems they only have the white one in stock.

  2. In Germany, the E-M5 body still goes for 900€. That’s 200€ less than launch price, but still a price hard to justify.

E-P5 is 1000€ what is even harder to justify.

E-PL5 and E-PM2 prices are much more palatable, but considering how much press the E-P5 and E-M5 got, they are now overshadowed and simply forgotten.

If that is how it is in other EU countries, I can easily see why Oly can’t expand market here.

P.S. Panny did recently promotion in bild.de what I thought was rather underhanded (Bild is a tabloid, but very popular one) but otherwise marketing-wise a pretty good move.

      1. 700€ is a nice price.

Since I already have Oly, I want to try Panny this time around. But if GX7 would turn out to be a lemon, then I might take you on that deal. 😀

    1. Europe is subsidizing the US, that’s how it goes. It’s not just cameras, it’s basically everything else, cars, game consoles, refrigerators, etc.

        1. Crap opinions you share on crap print opinions.
It would seem that Europe does not share your need for a world full of guns.

For some real facts of life see this. An extract.

“When I talk to American audiences,” Hill said in an interview, “many find the figures I cite hard to believe. They haven’t heard them before. U.S. businesses making more profits in Europe than anywhere else, 20 times more than in China? 179 of the world’s top companies are European compared with 140 American? That does not fit the preconceptions.”

Go on read the rest and learn then look for more web sites that show it to be correct. Or does it frighten you?
          http://blogs.reuters.com/great-debate/2010/02/12/who-wins-in-u-s-vs-europe-contest/

So The world is in reality subsidising the US.

        2. I live and work in Asia, currently China. The American people are as blinded by the cult of ‘freedom’ and ‘allegiance to the flag’ as any Chinese are to their country. It’s indoctrination pure and simple. Very few Americans survive long over here. Most cannot or will not try to understand the culture they have chosen to work in; constantly demanding that things be the way they are in their own country. The Europeans, for the most part, are much more integrated and understanding and, dare I say, successful. Of course these are generalisations, but, for the most part, they are true.

It’s quite pathetic to hear such ignorance from the mouths of Americans who have no idea how little they actually know about their own history, let alone that of the world.

The best products are not made or designed in the USA, the USA’s own technology sector relies almost totally on foreign brainpower.

As for the link given regards USA military? I wouldn’t be proud of the USA’s spending on war and the number of dead and dying for corporate greed.

        3. The Eye.

It shows that EU exports more to the US than it receives from the US in goods by a fair margin and about the same but trending upwards in services.
Interesting thing here is the EU must be able to produce cheaper than the US despite the EU socialistic regime cost on production. Or the US has low productivity due to a workforce that is not in tip top condition due to retarded health systems. The other alternative is that the EU produces better quality. Again refer to better health systems.
Reality seems to detract from a rosy US full of healthy productive people. With a Europe full of welfare and idle people.
Yes. The EU is subsidising the US and leading the way to a better future for all not just the Wall St. “Brigands Brigade”.

          1. Hello Jim,

Agree with the above, more or less. In fact the whole World is financing the American debt, just by buying dollars, however let’s be specific about cameras.

The European VAT, from 20% down depending on EU country, does not go to finance the NHS or pensions as commonly believed. It goes to pay for the EU administration and mainly its agricultural policy, in the form of subsidies to farmers the EU over. This was asked by the French farmer lobbies half a century ago, but it has a rationale. It makes the EU self sufficient in food.

Isn’t it interesting that the 20% more we pay on cameras goes to finance our steaks and beetroots? 🙂
But then it also goes to renovate the city centre of Leeds (sidewalks) and other regional investments of the EU.

I have mixed feelings about this but I certainly cannot hold it against the US: much more worrying is the doubt about the NSA using its listening in Europe, its main target, for industrial espionage.
But again we know from yesterday that they have been doing illegal taps on american citizens too.

To be spied upon by a foreign power violating one’s privacy is simply horrible, but it doesn’t have (yet) to do with photography.

I find even more directly abusive the coercion of the First Amendment by photographic sites with arbitrary bans. But this is a universal tendency:

            http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/aug/16/trolls-journalism-editors

It’s only that most of the sites are based in the US and mods, like editors, don’t feel there isn’t anything fascist, in silencing dissenters. How wrong, and debasing for civil liberties!

          2. What a bunch of rubbish!
How would you explain the fact that VAT existed in those countries long before EU existed Einstein!?
Let me give you a clear example that shows that you really should check your facts before you make fool out of yourself.
(knowing your previous history here, I am not sure that is possible)
Here is one example, you may find similar digits for other countries, numbers from Sweden were easiest to find:
Sweden: VAT income for 2012: 334,4 mkr (billions of kronor)
Payment to EU: 21,9 mkr (billions of kronor)
I hope you haven’t missed all of your math classes and that you can see that you were utterly wrong in your political and demagogical rubbish..

          3. I really feel no obligation to answer such an unpleasant person.

However for the sake of truth, I’ll must add: yes, VAT existed in many countries, with other names half a century ago. However at some point part of it was devolved to finance the EU organisations. Ask yourself instead how the EU is financed. By direct transfers?

And let us know how Sweden finances the EU. With a Tax on Snow? LOL

So as an approximation one can say that the differential in price between US and EU, is due to the level of public services, which is the common notion. If you import a camera from outside the EU you’ll hit an import tax across the whole territory of the Union, and that is what matters.

Now go and learn some manners.

          4. “The European VAT, from 20% down depending on EU country, does not go to finance the NHS or pensions as commonly believed.”

Why write something like this in the first place then. Of course that the “EU fee” is payed from collected taxes.
Again those collected taxes are about 1570 billions of kronor for Sweden, so your statatement is plain incorrect.

As I said, I have read a lot of things you wrote here and on DPR, manners aren’t really not your stronger side (mildly expressed)..

          5. Luda. check your facts against your wishfull thinking.
VAT does indeed outdate the EU by many years. You seem to think that if it did not happen in your time or memory it did not happen.

A bit like sex. Teenagers think they are the only ones to think/act on it. Nobody ever did in earlier generations.

          6. Interesting comment from a News Limited person now on the other side about a nut who is in an ultra right wing stable that disconnects all who are against them. Murdoch hates trolls that’s why his papers are determined to make sure people vote according to his wishes. Of course he cant do that in UK the Guardian makes sure of that NOW, but giving up the NoW was only a lesser thing (smoke screen) to the alternative charges that could have been placed in the UK. But in the US and particularly in Australia they are hard at work.
News Limited papers in Australia have been running constant ‘article’ (unnamed special presentations included) pressure and lots and lots of small odd niggles against the government since they took office about the time the PM had lunch with Murdoch in NY.
Murdoch an American is controlling who gets elected in Australia. If it were the other way round legal action could be taken.
Amalric this link has bugger all to do with photography and nor has the response.

          7. Not sure if I follow you.

On one hand I try to stick to the contention that the reason why pay 20% more than in the US, is because we have better health services, and this is certainly not true. We simply pay more Income Tax.

OTH I address a violation of Universal Rights, Freedom of Speech, which comes even before Photography. Why I, a European Citizen, must be coerced by the regulations of a private provider? Either the Rights are Universal or they are not.

Part of the same rights is the respect of Privacy, another rule across the Union. If you read the press today you’ll see that Google argues that people are glad to relinquish their rights on the Web.
Which I take for absolute BS, to justify their giving access to the NSA. To me this is Brave New World. Not the democracy where I want to discuss, Photography included.

        4. Hey, you guys down there: my reply was to anonymoose’s preprosterous post, who wasn’t backed up by anything. I suppose you all agree with him? Did I claim I was agreeing with the content and the premise of the article I linked? Funny though that I hear so much squealing after chucking a rock into the pig barn. I guess I did hit a nerve or two. Other than that, please let me add that I am not an American, but a European who happens to live in the US.

          1. Everyone hates the US. But it is where most want to live according to the polls. So don’t let your jealousy cloud that each of the 314MM people that live here are different and not all southern republicans. THAT shows your EU ignorance as I would not think that of a Euro in regards to French smelling, bad teeth Brits, etc. and all the other stereotypes. It is funny when I ask a Euro if they have been to the US and they all have been to NY but pretty much nowhere else. That is not what the US is like…we are like many countries rolled into one. But if you don’t believe me you can read the poll below. Now…back to cameras…..

            http://www.gallup.com/poll/153992/150-million-adults-worldwide-migrate.aspx

          2. I don’t know if your reply was aimed at me or someone else. I live by choice in the US, and if I didn’t like it here, I would have left soon after arriving here two decades ago.

I have no interest in discussing politics, economics or anything on a photo forum. I will however sink low enough to chuck rocks back at those who liberally toss them.

          3. It was not directed at you….more the Euros above who love to bash the US. If you fit the description then yes….it was meant for you.

  3. Your Coupon Code for Lightroom doesn’t work at Adorama. Please stop posting this coupon code. It’s not valid.

  4. Actually since the EU/USD rate is 1.33, and the VAT is 20% we should still pay less than the present prices – some 10% less.
