  1. interprets 3x different sized question marks as:
    – the one above the EM5
    – an entry model below the EM5
    – an XZ-3 … add NFC and WiFi

Would be amazing to see them bring out an X100s/GR/A/X2 model with the 5-axis (or 2-axis) IBIS and a fixed 28 or 35 equivalent before I dump all my Oly/Pan stuff on eBay

picking up my Ricoh GR today 🙂
^ potential replacement for the Oly 12/2.0 & Pan 14/2.5 and one of my PENs

    1. Interesting interpretation. I was expecting something more in the lines of “The One is coming” etc. so playing with the model number, but I guess that’s already spilled out..

      1. Mike…the 20mm is like the SLOWEST focusing lens in the MFT AF quiver…you may want to revise that lens choice?…then what you are saying is on target.

  2. if it’s the high-end OM-D, here’s my not too unrealistic wishlist:

    All of EP-5 spec improvements
    ev4 EVF or better
    new sensor
equal or better AF than E5 with 43 lenses
Fully articulated LCD (like the E5)
    better ergonomics and buttons
    Overhauled menus

This would be worth 1500 dollars to me.

      1. Shall we also get a camera the size of an E-5 (preferably a bit bigger vertically), or is it time for us E-x owners to finally jump ship?

      1. The video is what is really making me want the GX7, considering there might be hack for it to be insanely good like the gh2/3

  3. My wishlist:
    – fast AF with 43-lenses.
    – weather-sealing.
    – fully articulating screen.
    – new sensor.
    – bigger than OMD, but not as bulky as E-5 (maybe as big as E-520).

      1. Fuji has the zooms that I want 😉 If size wouldn’t matter for me I would buy a Nikon or Canon, but for traveling it’s better with a small and leightweight equipment.

  4. My money is ready for an
em1 + HG 12-40 f2.8 + voigtlander 17.5 and if there’s an xz3 with 5 axis IS & sony 1 ich sensor with excellent video then I’m sold and will be set for years to come.

  5. m43 seems to be doing well in the UK – or both Pana and Oly just invest a lot in marketing. I’d love to have these tours here in Germany. Altough you see m43 in almost every big store (with conspicuously many G3s), from what I see in Berlin, DSLRs still have an iron grip, at least on tourists – next are superzooms, then P&S. When I see system cameras or high-end compacts, it’s Sony for the former and Fuji for the latter.

  6. Olympus heard a rumor that a new OMD was coming. Olympus responds with “???” What the hell are you guys talking about?

  7. Look at us! Look at us! Look! Shiny! SHINY!

Do NOT look over at the Panasonic counter, with the GX7.

I TOLD YOU NOT TO LOOK!

Look at us! We’re doing a silly dance with a funny hat on!

Why is no-one talking about us?

    (flunky whispers in ear)
What, we can just put out some vague press statement with a cheap graphic and everyone will get excited? Really? Awesome, do that. I’ll get the guys in engineering to slightly change the colour of the kit lens and we can launch it as a mk3.

    SHINY! NEW!

  8. On dpreview a rumor is posted that the new OMD has a 21 Mpx sensor and 15 stops of DR. Maybe Admin could check that? For a high-end model these specs sound reasonable, I mean why would they use the 16 Mpx sensor of the EM5…

    1. > Why would they use the 16MP sensor?

Because that’s all they got, that’s why. It happened before, when they had the E-5 with ye olde 12MP sensor; meanwhile, Pana kept the better GH2 sensor to themselves. Although it is unlikely that this will repeat itself. Sony’s sensor division is (more) independant of its imaging division, and Oly is not a direct competitor the way it is between Oly Pana. 15 stops DR sounds like bad news for the GX7. Assuming this new sensor really has 15 stops DR and that will make its way into the E-M5 successor, Pana really only has the different form factor and the availability on its side (if they pull it off). What Pana needs is their own OMD, and they won’t have it if they always lag behind one generation in sensor performance.

      1. The new OMD is more expensive, so I think both companies have their point. You have to shell out a bit more to get the high-end model.

      2. I think there is another reason: for a given technology and sensor size, if you go over the sweet spot, you get more noise/less resolution.

I remember that is what happened with the NEX7. It didn’t have more resolution than the NEX 6, which had ‘only’ 16 Mpx.

Hence with the smaller m4/3 sensor we are already in a danger zone.

Also, 15 EV of DR, I’ll believe it when I see it. You don’t get a 3 stops increase in one year, if ever.

        1. The NEX7 is 24MP, while the NEX6 has 16MP.
You’re right, there were noise problems with the NEX7.

Given the smaller M4/3 sensor size, 21MP would be quite a leap and one would be concerned that more noise would be introduced along with the extra megapixels.

But, hey, added noise could be a feature… like a global retro “art” filter. Imagine the Gordian knots people would tie themselves into trying to justify it and convince themselves it was a desirable “effect”… 😉

          1. What matters is resolution in the end, and SNR, which are two aspects of the same thing. I remember an interview with an Adobe head designer explaining that there had been a considerable progress in denoising algorithms in a few years.

That is what explains that the Mpickles race never really stopped. Higher density sensor have a *potential* for more resolution, but only if properly denoised. Otherwise the base noise should be higher.

I doubt that Oly would do the same mistake did with the NEX7. Also better lenses should follow to make use of the increased resolution, so if a maker is serious, like Oly is, you don’t get such a sudden jump in a few months.

Of course I could be wrong but those rumors have no source so far.

          2. Maybe the pixel count includes those “half-pixels” used for PDAF. I agree that any increase above 16MP in image resolution is unnecessary and greedy.

        2. I seem to recall from doing the math that 16 Mpx in m43 in effect is close to twice the pixel density of 36 Mpx in FF.

For me, 16 Mpx is fine! Those that really need 24-36 Mpx should probably consider FF.

        3. Agree with you here.
But what if they managed a 20MP Sensor with the BSI Tech from the new Sony RX100MK2 that one is a leap forward on high ISO because of the BSI Tech.

I actually hope Oly would get that Tech for their next OM-D together with 20MP that would be all good and sufficient for my needs, for a loooooong time to come.

Tests showed that with the new BSI Sensor 6400 on the MK2 is like 3200 on the MK1 which sounds really good if you would apply that on the latest m4/3 Sensors

        4. The NEX-7 made more impact during the introduction, then it actyually did after lots of online reviews.More like “show what we can build” camera, with imperfections here and there(especially the problems with wide angle legacy lenses).Lets hope the GX-7 will not share that same fate..

        5. Nex7 no more resolution then the nex6. Are you sick in the head? Nex7 has superb resolution etc…. And in comparison to m43 it has godlike resolution etc….

    2. Oh, he relies on 43rumors on his claims: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3531072

It’s true that there was one rumor about the next OMD having 15 stops DR: http://www.43rumors.com/ft2-new-rumors-about-next-omd-camera-has-15-stops-dr/

It doesn’t even say DR, it says “latitude”. Maybe that’s the same, I don’t know. Point being, 15 stops was mentioned once in a FT2 rumor, and never since. 21Mp has never been mentioned to my knowledge.

      1. I’d say “latitude” does not take the S/N ratio in the darker tones into account, but I’m guessing.

  9. maybe they came up with a really great noise reduction algorithm? =)
It really sounds a bit crazy, but who knows. They had to redesign the sensor for PDAF anyway…

  10. why do they keep on calling this a high end replacement ?
isnt it basically the old OMD with the new technology from the EP-5
unless the sensor is a defintely an upgrade ?

    1. by ‘high end’ you can expect an integrated grip in a monobloc type, like the F5/D1/D2/D3/D4
      and the integrated VF4

      1. Monobloc totally condradicts the size aspect of m43, even if it would still be much smaller than the mentioned cameras. Further, the E-x series had add-on grips. I expect nothing else from the new cam.

        1. Not necessarily all things considered. My gh3 with the battery grip, 35-100, and a fl50 with a diffuser is leagues smaller and especially lighter than my 1dmk4 with the 70-200, and canon sb900. And the ergonomics are very even, there are buttons for what i need where i need them. The bags they need are in a totally different league too, I need a backpack for the canon stuff, and a small sling bag for the gh3 stuff (passport sling). And unless im at iso 6400 (im not) the quality from both my omd and the gh3 is pretty on par with the mk4. Despite what the dxomark activists say.

          1. It is Nikon that have an SB900 flash best look a bit closer at the name on “your ” flash

  11. I hope an improved sensor otherwise hard to justify changing from my E-M5
GX7 is said to have a different sensor, could it be in the new OMD ?

and also an eye-cup that is better fixed 😉

  12. If Sony brings in something like Canon dualpixel the 16MP would be enough. They need a good PDAF for 43 + m43 lenses and use with moving objects.

  13. I was at BH photo yesterday,.and chatted with my friends, and one of my trusted friend said ;

The new FF mirror less from sony will be much cheaper price than the The new High End OM-D camera from olympus.

is it The New OM-D price will be so high ? or Is it Sony wants to kill every camera with their New FF mirror less ? i had no clue about this .

He said just hold on your deep pocket,.Untill this october.

    1. Maybe he confused it with the (APS-C) NEX-7 Successor
Maybe Sony plans to gain a huge market share while selling at a loss
Maybe it’s bullshit, since even the RX1 price is higher than the projected E-M1 price.

    2. in case those talking about a new Sony FF have forgotten basic physics; FF=MASSIVE AND HEAVY LENSES!!!!!!

      1. haha..
all these people horny for FF compacts…. Teeny tiny bodies with need-a-tripod-to-holdem-up lenses attached to them..

  14. So we have the futurologists claiming the impossible. That NEX FF will be the same price of the OM-D pro.

Where is your data, wanker? And what about the lenses? A Zeiss 2.8 for less than a thousand bucks? LOL

And then we have the filthy reactionaries claiming for apartheid between 4/3 and m4/3:

    http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3530490?page=3

I am sure that Oly’s will be the usual success. After all they don’t produce words.

  15. Olympus has some serious problems to deal with and it doesn’t look good.
Go look at the data Roger Cicala put in his recent article about lens repairs and failures. At the end the graphs show that Olympus is last in repairs.

“Repair turnaround time had a few changes compared to last year. Olympus had some disarray this year. (In case you weren’t aware, Olympus suddenly closed their repair center and for several weeks no one knew where anything was, or even where you could send a repair.) Their average turnaround time is higher because several items were gone for several months during the chaos, but even if I took those away they still would be the slowest by a good margin.”

Between the high prices and lack of service, I’m not getting another Olympus.

    1. Here in Europe Oly’s main center in German has an excellent turnaround. I can witness: ten days before shipping.

Not only, it has other national repair centers. So again, what happens on the other side of the pond, is not necessarily true elsewhere.

  16. I am going to stick my head in the sand… While I could be wrong I really am not sure a m43rds product will be ready for the main stage in their flagship camera (being one that PDAFs properly)…

But we only have a few weeks to go, and I wouldn’t mind being wrong and seeing a body use my 43rds and m43rds lenses without compromise.

    Fun!

  17. The OM-D are an evolutionary line. It seems that this time the focus will be on backwards compatibility with 4/3.

Will it be 100%, will it be 80% Will it be enough to stop the 4/3 dSLR line? All the rest is welcome but this, methinks, is the main point.

  18. I have unboxing the new Olympus OMD with E-M5 body + E-P5 features + 12-40mm f2.8-4 lens weather sealed for 1599.00$. That was my dream last night! ;-))
