RUMOR: Next Version of Lightroom will support X-T1 tethered shooting (new source). Fujifilm launches SDK

 photo asd_zps6ab20bee.png

As you migh remember, back in November, Fujifilm announced the Tethered Shooting Software “HS-V5 for Windows® Ver. 1.0”. According to Fujifilm itself, the windows software should be available as soon as this months (quote: “The HS-V5 for Windows® Ver.1.0 software will be on sale from January 2015. Pricing will be announced on launch.“)

Now, according to a new source (thanks), Adobe is right now working on the tethered shooting support for the X-T1 and will implement it in the next version of Lightroom.

The grain of salt is mandatory for now… but if true, with the next LR update both, Mac & Windows users, could be able to use tethered shooting.

And just a few hours ago, Billy of the Fuji Guys offered (via twitter) an SDK to those who would like to develop their own tethering software. Sadly, the SDK is not availble for public download (for now).

  1. Makes sense that tethered shooting would be the next step for Lightroom, might as well include the X-T1 now that it’s capable.

      1. Though tethering only has been usable since somewhere around version 4 or so. Before that it was just an unstable and unreliable nightmare and it was much more robust to tether to Nikon Capture and use LR’s auto import feature instead of tethering directly into LR.

They always said it was the fault of the camera manufacturers’ SDKs, but at some point apparently they were able to solve most of the major issues after all. Tethering is now quite usable, even though that floating control bar is pretty idiotic in terms of UI design (pretty much always covering part of the image unless moved so far off screen that half of the controls can no longer be clicked).

      2. As a basic remote kind of way, i was picturing live-view like with the apps. But maybe that’s not how it works or supposed to, i don’t know.

    1. In theory, Fuji had a wireless “PC Auto Save” for ages, an LR is capable of “watching” a folder. So – in theory, mind ya! – we had a way to do a wireless tethering almost from the get go. In practice, I’ve never managed to make “PC Auto Save” work for more than a couple of seconds.

  2. I would happier to read that X-Trans conversion has been radically improved. That is a far bigger issue than tethered capture for me.

    1. I would be happy enough if image quality for Bayer sensors finally was on par with Capture One, they finally figured their trainwreck of a mobile workflow out and they finally got rid of all their annoying memory leaks and slowdowns. The recent lack of mainstream competition with Aperture being EOLd hasn’t exactly been helping either. These days, Adobe are outmicrosofting Microsoft it seems.

  3. The SDK is available free of charge, but one has to sign a license agreement. Lightroom Tethering will of course be available, too. That has never been a secret, there was talk about it at Photokina.

At Photokina, Fuji also demoed an improved wifi remote control software that could control three different cameras at once.

Capture One tethering? Sure, but that’s probably up to the folks art Phase One, who recently didn’t sound overly excited about their Fuji customers.

Basically, ANYONE can now develop USB tethering solutions for the X-T1, be it stand-alone or for integration in existing apps.

    1. Will you be able to use the buttons and controls on the camera itself with the improved version? As of now, the camera shutter button and functions one the camera itself are locked out with the wifi remote control software.

    2. “Lightroom Tethering […] has never been a secret, there was talk about it at Photokina.”

      1) a private/confidential talk or 2) a public/official interview/statement?

In the latter case (2) I apologize with my readers because I completely missed that tethering talk in my photokina live coverage… I wasn’t able to find this talk anywhere. Did the best I could with the photokina coverage… but apparently not good enough

        1. I know… first hand news, go there and talk to people is much better.

I just have to find a way to convince my school director that I need to quit a week of lessons for a photography fair 😉

btw, the director, she knows that I run FR (without her permission I could not have a second job… a written permission that has to be renovated every September). So it’s better not to skip a single lesson, or she could have the power to close FR 😉

    3. Hi Rico, I’m looking for the SDK but google only shows up Fuji SDK for iOS. Do you know where I can find the SDK you mentioned? Thanks!

  4. This is nice, but it wouldn’t exactly hurt them to release an SKD for demosaicing their RAW files, either. This doesn’t have to include subsequent processing, such as film simulations, etc. but to go months after the release of X-Trans without decent support from anyone is pretty bad. I understand it was the same with EXR & SuperCCD.

  5. Fantastic. LR is delivering a very crappy tethering even for very common cameras like the D8X0(E). Nothing you might expect from a professional software, like many things that remain really below par. Coming from Aperture I was forced to go LR for a number of strategical reasons a few months ago but I still detest to work with it and that feeling won’t change soon. This is in my eyes nothing else than a bit of an added value – but poorly written – directory and file browser allowing some basic corrections you’ll find in a zillion other tools as well, inflexible as hell and with a nerdy kind of complexity that is only there to make the tool look impressive. I can’t understand why so many people want a tool like this, paying lifetime fees to a company like Adobe while missing a real, flexible database approach in any sense.
