great article, well written and pretty concise. Now, I’m thinking of adding the 56, especially after this article.
Your getting the 56 I’m thinking about the 50-140.
better start lifting weights to handle that lens Morrie, it’s a wee bit bigger than your 23 F1.4
🙂 great as the first part but It hasn’t taken me out of the dilemma… 23f1.4 or x100? How can that be so difficult to decide for many of us? I guess both are so good. .
i would go with the X100, like having a back up, I love mine!
I really like the 23 F1.4 it is my go to lens. I do have an x100 but since getting the 23 it get little use.
Indeed. My main work is shooting hotel interiors, for what I use the 10-24 so an X-A1 is my backup. The tilt-screen is also welcome!
Not an easy choice…but for me I bought the 23mm 1.4 and I have to say that it is one of my favorite all time lenses…and I’ve owned plenty including Leica and Zeiss.
Thanks for the comment! I’m kind of in love with my x-pro1, It’s like the perfect camera for me, which you can pimp with accessories and make it a real photographer’s tool. So far I’ve found the AF performance to depend more on the lens so I can’t still believe on an upgrade before spending my money on glass. We all want small fast lenses and the X100 is there BUT! I never heard any Sony user complaining about the size of the superb Zeiss 24mm f1.8, which for them not only is an easy choice on that focal length but also the only lens that worth on the entire system, and doesn’t have a DOF scale and the same handling as the Fujinon 23mm. That said, I wished I had an x100 😉
Why is it so difficult? If you are not a pro photog, you honestly do not need a backup camera. You might think you do, but you don’t.
If you already have a body which accepts lenses, why would you be screwing around with an X100_? Just stick with the body you have and get the 23mm lens, end of story.
If you have no camera at all, get the X100_ and work your butt off with it. You’ll either find yourself satisfied with your decision OR in time, you’ll be able to justify your desire for an interchangeable system.
Take a x100 and share it with your partner 🙂
That’s a good take!
Cheers,
Zack
X100 camera is more compact than Xpro or XT and especially the lens is more compact. If you want to carry the camera everywhere the choice is the X100.
If you like the OVF the 23f1.4 blocks it on the Xpro so then the choice is the X100
The 27mm makes an X-e2 just as compact as an x100. Just 1 stop slower, and very sharp.
fabulous photography and well written article.
Thank you! That is the part I was waiting for!
Yes! This came just in time for Xmas. ;P
as an enthusiast, i still can’t decide whether to buy the lens converters for the x100s or skip it and by a fuji x body and save up for a prime or two.
My two cents would be this…
If you love the 23mm lens of the X100 and would like to shoot something different every now and then… the converters would be a good choice.
If you see yourself wanting to shoot other focal lengths a lot of the time then getting dedicated lenses like a 35mm or something makes more sense.
I love the X100 and its 23mm lens. I shoot it straight like that 90% of the time but there are times here and there that I’d like it to be a little wider or maybe have something a little longer for a quick portrait. The converters fit in my shoulder bag nicely and come in to play here and there.
I will say that once I can print to the Instax from the XT1 I’ll be shooting my 35mm on that more than the TCL on the X100. I can’t express how much I, and my clients, love these damn little Instax prints. It’s now a monthly budget item.
Cheers,
Zack
Thanks! I appreciate your feedback. It’s particularly the 35 or 56 I’m interested in for simple portraits of family and friends and the willing stranger whilst traveling.
Lovely, I’ve been waiting for this the whole week. I really enjoy Zack’s writing style. The previous part was my first read on his blog, and so many things clicked, it was amazing.
My kit: 10-24mm, 23mm, 56mm 55-200mm. I only ever take two lenses with me, either the wide zoom and the 56mm, or the 23mm and the telephoto zoom
My first kit plan for my X-T1 was 23mm + 56mm, but after the first week I realized that the 56mm was used too little (excellent IQ, but not flexible enough for my needs). Now my kit is 23mm + 50-140mm
Next: Samyang 12mm and I’m finished 🙂
