FREE Darktable 1.6 RC with “initial X-Trans support” (for Linux and Mac)

 photo asd_zpseb70ce13.jpg

Back in August I told you that there was an experimental X-Trans support available for the free software Darktable. Well, you can now download the Darktable 1.6 official release candidate with initial X-Trans support here. The free software Darktable runs on most Linux/Unix systems and Apple OS-X. An initial feedback can be read at the Spanish site fujistas (translation).

It’s always good to have more (and especially free) options to convert X-Trans RAF files… but how does the new Darktable 1.6 RC perform? Feel free to drop your findings in the comments.

      1. You still need to wait some time before they release 1.6 for Mac OSX.
For the time being you can get version 1.5.1 (by the time I checked today), hope 1.6 dmg will be available soon.

        1. 1.5.1 is the 1.6, kind of. it’s the release candidate of the 1.6, the guys at darktable adopted a confusing versioning convention where the odd version numbers are the development versions and the even the stable. The final version should be around the corner

          1. Hi, tks vm
This way of numbering is actually common within Linux, either for Kernel and distributions.
Hope you’re right and we get a stable version compiled for OSX soon and we can just download the dmg and install it.

      1. Yeah yeah. When I buy sushi i want it in pieces with some ginger on the side , not being slapped in the face with a live salmon.

        1. 🙂 At least Linux users have now a choice : rawTherapee (also for Windows, does an excellent job with Xtrans), Darktable (Not Tested Yet – Linux/Mac OS) and LightZone (Linux/Mac OS/Windows) reportedly pretty good with XTrans too

  1. Good news for Open sourced fuji users….

If you’re interrested in Open source Fuji X software, personally, I use Lightzone which with its latest beta support greatly Fuji X RAF and offers nice possibilities..

  2. I use darktable for X-Trans for several months now and I’m really happy. I like the demosaicing quality, the powerfull editing methods (including local editing) and I can handle my nikon files with the same tool 🙂

Like in RawTherapee you should configure the demosaicing appropriately. Make sure to use the Markesteijn 3-pass algorithm and set “color smoothing” to “five times”. Furthermore I recommend to activate some color denoising. If you like, you can download a style for these settings here: http://meterprosekun.de/temp/Fuji%20X-Trans%20HQ%20Demosaicing%20and%20Color%20Denoise.dtstyle

  3. I think raw support is in RawTherapee as well, courtesy to using dcraw. And that’s available even for Windows, for those who cannot move to something better 😉 (SCNR)

    1. For darktable they ported the algorithm from dcraw, but turned it into a floating point baed version. I think it is the same for RawTherapee. Hence, using dcraw is not exactly the same 🙂
