HIGH RATING

– X-T1 new firmware update is coming (posted August 15)
– X100T will have 16mp
– X100T successor of X100S
– X100T announcement September 10
– X100T EVF will have a x0.67 magnification and offer a horizontal apparent field of view of approx. 27°
– XF 120-400
– X-PRO2 with APS-C sensor
– No more X-PRO1S, all R&D placed into the X-PRO2

MEDIUM RATING

– XF 35mm MKII (As Fuji has first to complete its lens lineup, it could take a while before the 35 MKII hits the market… and Fuji can change plans in any moment regarding this lens.) PLEASE NOTE: This rumor was not reported accurately by other sites (as petapixel and mirrorlessrumors). They quote FR, but say that the lens is “coming soon”. Which I never said. None of my sources ever told me a release date. In fact I said on May 5th: “I do not know when it will be launched nor which improvements we can expect, but, as you may guess, I’m restlessly working on it.”
– Faster AF for the 35mm MKII (This rumor is separated from the first 35MKII rumor, as it comes from another source and was posted in another article)
– Button Upgrade
for the early produced X-T1′s with mushy buttons.
– X-PRO2 available in 2015
– New X-T1 firmware:
shutter speed will increase from 1/4000 to 1/32000 – better movie capabilities – faster/better AF (including phase detection on instant AF) – some other minor improvements (like new film simulation modes) – firmware updates will be released in October and December

LOW RATING

– Bokeh Lens: New XF lens with super-smooth bokeh coming? (dual aperture lens / STF)
– X-PRO2: available around “this time next year” with more than 16MP (the rumor was shared in late August 2014 by an anonymous source with nick name)
– X-PRO2 with 24MP
– X-PRO2 priced about 20% to 30% more expensive than the X-T1
– Fujifilm will launch three non-interchangeable lens X-cameras within this winter (winter 2014/2015)
– Sigma X-mount coming at photokina
– Medium Format Fuji (there are several anonymous sources telling me that this rumor is wrong. But I will post an update only when a trusted source speaks. And if they say, as to expect, that it is not correct, I’ll move it into the “wrong rumors” list)
– X200 with 24MP, tilt screen, improved AF and wider detection area (Medium rating as I think that some, but not all the specs will be correct. The name has changed almost for sure to X100T). NOTE: The 24MP rumor of the new source has been corrected later on by the tursted Japanese source

2014 rumor check

NOTE: You will see for example some X-T1 rumors (and others) listed sepratately. This is due the fact that there was, for example, a source telling me of a tilt screen, while another told me at a different time about the price and so on.

It’s fair towards my sources not to put everything together in the same pot and simply say “X-T1″, as every rumor listed here comes from a different source and was posted in different articles and could have been right or wrong.

Obviously the same goes for the wrong rumors. I don’t simply say “18-135 announcement”, but shared all 3 wrong release dates separately, so that they result as 3 errors and not as one.

WRONG RUMORS IN 2014

– X-T1P release with 4K viewfinder in July [An upgrade (or special/limited edition) is possible, but not in July]

– XF 18-135 will come in May
– XF 18-135 in stores in February
– X-PRO2 with FF sensor (wrong, and corrected a few weeks later by the top trusted Japanese source)

  1. Great to see that this camera is coming out so quickly. Unfortunately, its specs don’t seem to be worth upgrading for. No new sensor and inconsequential changes. Meh.

  2. That’s correct, I also find nothing exciting about X100T. No real moving forward means no upgrade for me! FF with at least 24MP would have been awesome. I don’t like the name either…

  3. If true, it seems to be a small upgrade. I’m sure many of us can live without a tilt screen. And the EVF on the X100s is fine as far as I’m concerned. I hope Fuji aren’t going the route of some other manufacturers who release cameras with minimal upgrading just because they think they should and / or they want us to part with more money.

As I said, if it’s true (and with Patrick’s nose for these things I’m sure it is) then it is disappointing.

    1. Are you guys not interested in attracting new users to the Fuji brand? Small iterations may not matter to current owners, but to a prospective switcher looking to buy, would not they rather see a newer model, than an old? I would think if they were looking to choose between a year old Fuji or a new model of some other brand, psychologically they may lean toward the newer.

      1. That’s a good point: new models seem more attractive than updated old ones, good as they are. But we haven’t seen everything yet. “Hits” are important for big shows like Photokina.

        1. Yes, and as the value of our existing model plummets with every new minor upgrade with indistinguishable final image quality changes, we are very happy with Fuji for protecting the investment of loyal customers, just as they promised.

          1. I would respectfully submit that consumer electronics items are not a wise “investment.”

If what you care about is image making, then a camera with more features but the same IQ makes your camera no less valuable to you if it still meets your needs.

          2. I guess we all have our priorities. I understand that you want the value of your model to stay as high as possible as long as possible. But I think everyone benefits from a successful Fuji brand. A larger user base means they can invest more money in more and better products.
And I agree with Douglas…. let’s see what comes 🙂
Can someone please convince my wife i need a new camera AND a new iPhone.

          3. We need an iPhone 6 with the bigger screen to better utilize the X100t’s wifi! Or maybe a water proof Samsung phone if the X100t is WR.

          4. I never understand people that talks about the value of their camera going down when a new camera comes out. So what. It’s not like it’s a collectible. Or a stock. I doubt you purchased it to sell it for a profit.

Who cares about resell value. All that should matter is how it affects your photography. A camera is tool. I don’t buy tools to make money unless I sell something I’ve made with the tool.

Technology and the digital age of cameras is a beautiful thing. But I swear it messes with a lot of peoples heads.

  4. Still not a believer in that this thing will be 16MP.
The leaked exif data from David Hobby clearly stated that the X100T had an 24MP sensor.

Meaby your source is purposely misleading fujirumors?

    1. I can’t remember the 24mp in David Hobby’s leaked EXIF data. But, if there was the 24mp on it, then Hobby did some wrong, or deliberately spread wrong information on the web.

I have no reason to doubt the Japanese source is wrong. Until now, it has a 100% hit rate (and it shared A LOT of rumors). Sure, even the best source can be wrong, maybe, but I can’t say more than this: I blindly trust the Japanese source.

      16mp, that is.

      1. Or the spec changed and his prototype was different from the final product. No way he mislead anyone or intended to leak.

      2. I’ve looked it up – seem you are right about not stating it would be 24MP. My apology. But also a big bummer if 16MP is true.

  5. Really glad they stuck to 16 MP. Excited to see what will be new. A new lens (as rumored) would be much more exciting than a MP bump. Or an Improved HVF… that is what I want to see. 1.5 times more MP will hardly increase the possible print size. To make a considerable jump there you need to scale up to 4x.

    1. 4x? How does that make sense? The D810 can definitely make far larger prints at its only 2.25x …

So I would think 64 MP (4x) could possible do a little better, lol

      1. 2.25x more megapixels allows for 1.5 times larger prints. In other words, you can go from 11 to 16.5 inch.

So if you put a 24 MP sensor in the X100T you can print 13 instead of 11 inch at 300 DPI. Big deal. But this will only really matter if you can keep the same pixel level sharpness.

    2. It’s almost certainly got exactly the same lens. They’ve spent money developing two converter lenses they’re not going to make obsolete overnight AND the David Hobby leak shows it has a 23mm lens, so in all likelihood it’s the same as before.

      1. We’ll see soon. I’m sure they will make some changes. Like a fast AF. They can also change the optics and still keep it a 23mm. 😉
The converters will work as long as the distance from the screwmount to the front principal plane is the same.

    1. Yep. Because sensor research has long been limited to the very tricky task of making pixels smaller and smaller. They just gave up on that an leave it to Sony and Canon.

    2. It appears that they haven’t had a break through or if so, time to manufacture to scale for this round of products. I’d imagine that they were working extremely hard to try to make Photokina. Maybe they’ll have some sort of tech demo, though that would be surprising. Or maybe they just have not leaked and we’ll see something amazing from both Fuji and Panasonic at the show.

      1. But it should be not too much work, wanted as well as expected to just take sonys 24 mpx aps-c sensor of d5200 (the frist 24 mpx apsc i think) was released end of 2012 /beginning of 2013 so at leaast and transfer it xtrans……so over two years old….

But it is a big, big bummer and dissapointment if the fuji x100 line /the fixed fl fuji cams doesnt get a new sensor at least….let alone the launch of the xpro 2 which is already missing at photokina and like its rumored to be next autumn/so one year from now apart….which is absolutely unbelievable if really true…if it is valid and true then it has to be the magic / your mentioned “organic sensor” if they need so much time and x pro 2 comes so late….otherwise they are killing the fuji system with this move and making themthelves ridicolous….next autumn 24 mpx aps-c x trans sensor…..

        1. OPTIMIST VIEW: I don’t know how much work goes into making a Sony sensor into XTrans. But if Fuji were aiming to have their organic ready but slipped, they might not have done the work on porting a 24mp Sony.

OPTIMIST VIEW #2: Or they might have tried and found that 24mp compromised the high ISO low noise that is so prized.

PESSIMIST VIEW: they’re just milking the R&D for one more cycle

NEUTRAL VIEW: Kaizen means small, continuous improvement and that’s exactly what they’re doing. Some will upgrade. Many will find that their X100s still takes great photos and won’t.

          1. I believe that even the Pessimist view is not that pessimist: you can keep your hard earned cash for another iteration and jump on the Wow one as soon as. And I confess that I am happy that they are churning out lenses more or less as planned (how many manufacturers give us a 12 month roadmap ?)

          2. They give us a 12 month roadmap, then deliver it more or less on schedule. I can’t think of any other camera manufacturer who does that. Okay, Canon and Nikon have very robust lens lineups, so the roadmap is less necessary. Sony is more analogous. Fuji compares extremely well there. And where it comes to acknowledging and addressing issues.

And viewed another way, they’re running their business with the goal of staying in business, so presumably, know how many versions are needed to recoup and make the profits needed to build the next model. 🙂

            But we all love surprises.

          3. 🙂

Looking across the industry, it seems like no one has yet turned over their cards. We’re seeing modest releases.

Canon’s biggest news (so far) is dropping the prices of some of their most expensive glass a little tiny bit. 🙂

Sony is building out their A7 lens lineup with pricey, slowish, all manual Zeiss glass. And have pink and gold versions of the cell phone lens.

Olympus has a boring selfie Pen, a silver EM1 and (hopefully) the long promised lenses.

Panasonic and Samsung are rumored to have some really good stuff. We’ll see.

Only Leica has showed something really big: their digital M-P, but that’s hardly a mainstream product, cool as it is. But maybe it will inspire weather sealing, dual cards, and a bigger cache in the XPro2! 😉

          4. you missed nikon 😉

The d750 the new legend…;), wideangle 20 1.8 fx primes areal d300s successr will may appear sonn as well …..the need sales in order to survive too much pressure now….

            the result they deliver finally….;)

Old Nikon maybe the biggest surprise on/at photokina i guess….;)

          5. Good catch! That’s indicative of how far they’ve slipped. I’d forgotten them. A competitively priced 1 system could be formidable. But not at current pricing. Agree that desperation will make them try something big. But that may not happen at this show — the Nikon implosion became obvious fairly recently and big products take time. The 810 may be their biggest thing. But I hope they embrace mirrorless and small DSLRs. Their days may be numbered.

          6. I reckon that the D750 is just there to put the D6xx line in the forgotten things bin. Let’s hope for Nikon that they don’t have another round of production issues. As for the Nikon 1 series it would need more than a price drop : from experience their 1″ Aptina sensor is not up to par and the lenses are not good enough and only received a polite round of applause. I don’t wish any ill to Nikon, keeping the competition lively is best for us, users but I am not expecting innovation from that camp – at least in the short to medium term.

          7. There’s some talk around the campfire that Sony will take that 50MP sensor that’s been adopted by Phase One and Hasselblad and put it into a (much, much cheaper) camera of their own. That would be a “wow” product that would disrupt the entire medium format area of the industry…

Still hoping the X100T gives us something that hasn’t been leaked yet…

          8. Agreed. And just like Sony to lose focus and confuse their A7 and DSLR customers. But it would be cool to see a really affordable MF option. Pentax is pretty close, however.

A 50mp A7 would also be pretty wild, now that the Zeiss glass is close to shipping. Or an Alpha DSLR model.

            It might actually wake Canon!

          9. If they do it in RX1 kind of body but with VF I’d get one and could retire my Mamiya 6 – that’s my walkaround MF camera

    3. Hear! hear! another Ratty Mouse insightful comment. I don’t know, you could have been a bit creative and complain about R&D funds/focus being diverted to their Health division to make a flu & Ebola treatment hence possibly leaving photographers stuck with a 16Mp APSC sensor ….. 🙂

      1. Yeah, I am sure that the folks working on cameras move over to their pharmaceutical division ALL the time.

        What frick’en joke.

  6. I wonder if the grip will change, like the X30, and if other lines will evolve as they did on the X30. The X30 grip appears more ergonomic but less attractive, as is the styling. Since the ergonomics are probably so close anyway (and not bad to begin with) I think I’d actually prefer style over handling in this instance.

  7. @Patrick Poll suggestion:

    What’s a better product vision:

    a) Continuous small, improvements (Kaizen)

    Or

    b) Longer product cycles that bring bigger changes

    1. As a software developer, I like small improvements, they’re better to manage than huge releases.

As a camera owner, I’m not so sure. Selling a camera that is one year old and has a successor will get you what, 50% of the price of the successor? Will that be worth it for the small improvements, or is it wiser to wait another (two) generations (and sell your camera for say 30% at that point?)

I doubt I will follow every release myself. But even when I’m not, there still may be benefits for me as there are people who always want the latest-and-greatest, and who’ll want to sell their current camera.

The release of a slightly improved X100T may be good news for people who are currently lusting after a X100S but don’t have the money to buy one.

      1. As a software developer too, I also like small, manageable improvements which are still significant for those who care for this particular improvement. e.g. tilt screen for me having a bad back is hugely beneficial whilst I appreciate that many others may not care. At least you have the choice for a rather small amount (diff between resale and purchase) to get those improvements or wait for the next iteration. In the meantime your existing gear does not become obsolote and does not loose too much in value either after the initial drop

  8. The one remaining matter that prevents me from switching entirely from an extensive Nikon system is the widely-disputed Fuji tendency to wash out skies (especially when exposure is biased towards the shadows): Nikon maintains a rich blue, even when (preferably) not set to “Vivid”, while Fuji’s skies tend for a great part towards a washy cyan. One is able to effect some remedy in Lightroom by shifting both Cyan and Blue towards the right (blue / magenta), and reducing exposure there by maybe -0.7 stops while increasing Saturation.
Please Fuji, make an urgent priority (!) of offering a new “Landscape Mode” or “Rich Blue Sky” mode, beyond “Velvia” which some may feel over-emphasises the remaining spectrum. Skin tones are already wonderful: this remains a major limitation however for many whose work is mostly landscapes. Sometimes Intensity of Colour is what makes the picture.
(24 Mpx seems highly desirable for the X-Pro 2 etc., considering the wonderful resolution of recent lenses such as the 14 mm and 23 mm.)

    1. This is the complete opposite of my experience as a former Nikon shooter – my D90 and especially D7000 tended to always wash out skies where as my Fujis (X100 + X-E1) never have this issue.

      1. Do you shoot raw or jpeg Raz? I sold my D7000 and purchased a X100 which I love. However I find the raw files far less workable than my Nikon nefs… (ie if I pull down the highlights the entire image gets darker instead of just the highlights. How has your experience been? I am looking at adding a XE1 so keen to hear your view. Cheers

        1. I shoot RAW exclusively. I’ve not seen a problem pulling down the highlights – what raw converter are you using? I’ve had no problems using Lightroom or Aperture with X100 files.

          1. X100 with the latest lightroom cc. I’ll have to go experiment some more. How do you find fuji rafs compared to nikon raw files?

          2. I’ve generally found with my D7000 files that while you can often recover detail in the highlights there’s little or no colour information so for example if you pull down the highlights too much in a blown sky you just get grey rather than light blue. If you’re having trouble pulling the highlights in RAF files darkening the whole image try using a gradient filter or adjustment brush to target the problem areas.

  9. It’s ironic to see the users of this forum real colors come out. “FF ISO performance” this, “world class lens design” that. To think you all just had “sensor envy” the whole time.

I realize you’re the loud minority since most photographers either don’t care or don’t have the time to, but I’m enjoying this moment nonetheless.

  10. Nobody seems to be talking about the X100T’s lens.

How much of a stretch would it be to guess that, since they’re probably updating the lens, they will fit a faster one onto it? Imagine a F1.4.

(Don’t forget Panasonic made a really small F1.7 lens, their 40mm pancake for MFT. F1.4 doesn’t have to mean big and bulky, when you can mate it directly to a camera which could house much of the lens internals within it.)

    What do you think?
