FIRMWARE

The news about the new firmware leaked yesterday. Fuji quickly removed it, and put it back online today on their global site. It will be available for download in late June. Now we have more details about it:

“FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Shigehiro Nakajima) will launch a new firmware for digital cameras in late June that makes it possible to send images via WiFi to an instax SHARE Smartphone Printer SP-1 for instax instant film prints. The firmware is designed for three X-Series cameras: the FUJIFILM XQ1 (a premium compact camera), the FUJIFILM X-M1 and the FUJIFILM X-A1 (APS-C sized sensor mirrorless cameras).

By updating to this latest firmware, users can easily send digital camera photos directly to the instax SHARE Smartphone Printer SP-1 for great quality prints of their family, friends, pets and more, even if they are fast moving. Additionally, portrait images are produced with a pleasant out-of-focus background for amazing one-of-a-kind instant prints – perfect for home décor.”

    1. Yeah curious as to why this wouldn’t be for all WiFi X series cameras. Bundled in with bigger firmware updates perhaps.

      1. Thou should not use an SP-1 with your profigiganticexpert X-T1, because SP-1ishness is intended only for those wretched, wacky cretins which some call BEGINNERS! It is an abhorrent rumor that some profigiganticexperts with their profigiganticexpert X-T1s may actually WANT to wallow in SP-1ishness, too.
That is why they seem to only release the update for the Q, A and M (owns an SP-1 and a X-T1 myself).

        1. I have to disagree that. I own an X-T1 and considering buying SP-1 solely because it’s a good social tool to approach your subject. It would be very nice to them if you could give a instant-print of whatever you shot. And when you go to some big event, this will also become your promotion tool, I’m talking about comicon or anime convention.

  1. 🙁
Why not a real remote control via smartphone for these three cameras, as it works nicely on XT1?

  2. For me, this is disappointing. I was hoping for an E2 update to add the intervalometer and remote wifi triggering we’ve been promised. It’s good for those who want this functionality on these cameras but for me…. Snooze

  3. Yawn.

I’ve been eagerly waiting for the possibility to select a different color for focus peaking for my X-M1.

  4. Fuji is making loads of money with instax film. And they want more. 😉
Would be much more interesting with a printer for wide film.

      1. inch? At some point the printer will not be portable any more. Wide would lend itself because of the existing film.

But I guess I’d still prefer my land camera and the FP-100/3000.

        1. Ok, 3×5 borderless. I’m just thinking of standard sizing and presentation. Always better without borders!

  5. Any rumors about an upcoming firmware update for the X-pro 1/X-E1//X-E2?

Also, are there any more rumors about the X-Pro 2 or the mirrorless medium format camera?

Hopefully they do release the medium format camera, but they don’t give it an X-Trans colour filter, as it is becoming obvious that Fuji will not support their X-Trans cameras with either a bare-bones raw converter or the ability to convert raw files to 16-bit TIFF in camera. Without either of those options, it would be stupid to spend a lot of money on such a potentially great camera, as we will never be able to get the full potential in image quality out of it.

If you are going to continue neglecting the X-trans sensor cameras, by not providing a bare-bones raw converter or the ability to convert the files to 16-bit TIFF in-camera, then don’t make any more cameras with an X-Trans colour filter: it really is pointless if the only optimal raw converter (the in-camera converter) is limited to saving as lossy jpegs.

Sadly, despite the fact that I very much like the way fuji designs its cameras and their high-quality lenses, if they keep ignoring the raw conversion issue, the X-Pro 1 could be my last Fuji camera. That said, I have spent thousands on Fuji lenses already (for both my wife and I), and, if they stop neglecting this issue, I am planning to spend a lot more, as I do love their gear. They must, however, stop ignoring the issue and provide us with a bare-bones raw converter or the ability to convert the files to 16-bit TIFF in-camera – or stop using the X-trans colour filter!

    1. Maybe you should send this to Fuji directly instead of posting it here over and over again.
And by 16 bit TIFF you mean 16 bit per channel? That will give you some really large files.

      1. Thanks, but I have already sent the suggestion to Fuji. And, as a X-Series camera user, I would be surprised if you don’t care.

Anyone who wants the most out of their camera should care, as the current options available for raw conversions are not optimal, to say the least. Among the external raw converters, Capture One produces the best results, but not as good as the in-camera raw converter.

        1. You have a point, but I think the difference between Capture One and in camera is more a question of color, not resolution. So it is not a question of demosaicing. And to give away their color profiles Fuji would probably ask for some money and rightly so.

In-Camera TIFF won’t hurt anybody but I am also quite happy now with CO and JPGs.

If you sent it I am sure Fuji heard you. And will eventually react to it.

          1. Actually, I just tested it again, and the in-camera converter produces sharper images with better resolution than Capture One. And, the colours are definitely better, which is why I want Fuji to provide us with their own bare-bones converter or the ability to convert raw files to 16-bit TIFF in-camera. In addition, I just tested ACR with the film simulations, and it is still garbage.

            Have a great night.

  6. This reminds me of adding a “print” button on the back of the camera. Former Canon users know what I’m talking about.
