2.8? -__-
Should’ve been at least a 2.0 lens. I’ll stick with my 60mm macro.
If you’re shooting macro at F2, you’re doing it wrong.
You can take more than macro photos with the 60mm, it’s a great portrait lens with lovely bokeh.
I didn’t realize that it was a macro until now after clicking the image (macro wasn’t mentioned in the post).
Still, like Wen mentioned, it’s too short of a focal length to pay a premium price for. I still believe Zeiss should’ve made a 50 1.4 or 1.8 instead of their 32mm at the same price tag. Probably $200-300 cheaper than Fuji’s 56mm 1.2.
Zeiss doesn’t make “cheap” glass pal.
Who said $900 for a 50mm 1.4 or 1.8 is cheap? It however could be a cheaper alternative to Fuji’s 1.2 creation which I’m guessing will be between $999-$1199
They make their 50mm for Canon and Nikon for about $700 btw.
50mm is a bit of a weird focal length on crop really, and besides there are already so many great ones out there with an adapter … at literally any size, weight, character, or price point.
A 32mm F1.8 makes much more sense on crop. A normal focal length that is of use allround instead of a 75mm equiv that is just too narrow most of the time. Every system or new line-up needs a normal lens first. They didn’t have a choice. 🙂
The same for Fuji. But now that they are going to do a portrait focal length, it makes sense to go all the way and make it something special. F1.2 and not 75mm but 85mm equivalent.
I wonder if they’re even capable of making a cheap prime. They certainly didn’t succeed with the 27/2.8 at €430 🙁
FYI: There is a [used] Voigtlander 50mm 50/1.1 Leica M Mount Lens now at cameraquest for $799. 😀
Yes, that is F1.1 🙂
Seriously. I’ll wait for the 56mm 1.2.
…yep
If this is 1:1 and performs beautifully, this plus the 56/1.2 can replace my Fuji 60mm and essentially complete the system for me.
Oh joy a Zeiss 50mm f2.8 that will no doubt cost as much as Fuji’s upcoming 56mm f1.2…
too short for insects, too expensive for the blue badge. Just grab a decent manual macro lens with adapter if you need 1:1, it’s not like you are going to use AF for macro work.
Yawn
I think it’s about time for Fuji to release X-system’s AF/bayonet specs to the real 3rd party players, like Sigma and Tamron.
Geez. They’ll probably sell like eight of these.
The reviews I’ve read on the Zeiss Touit lenses for X cameras weren’t all that enthusiastic, particularly given their price and heavy build. Does anyone here own and use them?
I’ve used the 12mm… lovely lens that is very sharp across the frame and produces beautiful colour and contrast. It’s not exactly small though, and it was actually difficult to get it to fit into the mount, which was a worry. I haven’t used the 14mm, but I can’t say the Zeiss had anything that for me justified the price over the 14mm.
I think everything you need to now is in a x-pert corner article.
Save your money…a 50mm macro is pointless, especially at the price point it will sell for.
hopefully Fuji will produce a 1:1 100mm f/2.8 macro with IS. Once they do that, and produce a fast telephoto lens, I can sell off all my Canon gear. Until then, I guess I will stick with two systems.
I use the touit 12mm and I like it a lot, but I got a great price on one used with warranty. I wouldn’t pay $1250 for it over the fuji 14mm. But add me to the list of people who will be passing on the 50mm 2.8. If it was fast enough to be a decent portrait lens I’d bite, but 2.8 is a bit slow, and I don’t use AF for macro.
Little appeal for Fuji users but I believe the original target market was Sony users. I have the Fuji 14mm and very pleased except the loose aperture ring which could be tighter.
For macro i have a wonderful Tamron 90mm f/2.8 manual adaptall lens, works on almost any camera, doubles asa portrait lens, is relatively light, extremely sharp, smooth bokeh, and cost only about $300 new, but I got mine used for under $200 on ebay. Highly recommended for those that want to do macro. It compliments my Fuji 55-200 nicely
Double yawn.
Without being snarky, I really have no use for a relatively expensive, relatively slow, maybe heavier and larger lens that is 10mm shorter and a half stop slower than my 60mm.
Now the 56mm 1.2 makes sense, for example for shooting concerts and stage acts, and a decently long (200mm equiv.) macro, or a long, fast prime for sports, animal or birding photography, might very well find a place in my bag, but this lens has no conceivable application, at least for the way I shoot.
In fact, on reflection, let me go a bit further:
If someone gave me this lens tomorrow, I’d instantly list it on ebay in the hope that some naive Zeiss fanboy would take the bait.
FYI: Date has been pushed back to February on B&H’s site.
According to Zeiss, the lens won’t be available before 1Q 2014.
It’s a shame Zeiss doesn’t fill one of the many gaps in the lens lineup instead of releasing these lenses which are generally more expensive than similar Fuji lenses, but with little in the way of improvement over them.
