X-E1 successor to be announced already late October? (new source)

X-E1S/X-E2 on the way?

Has Fuji really stepped up the release of the X-E1 successor? Well, I’ve just received a feedback from another new source who told me that the X-E1 successor will be announced already in late October. The new (and unconfirmed) source told me it should happen around the 20th of October.

There is the photoplus Expo in New York (30th anniversary) starting on the 24th of October. This could be a good event to present the X-E1 successor.

But until now everything we know about the X-E1S / X-E2 comes from new and unconfirmed sources so take it with a grain of salt. Any help to dig up information on the X-E1 successor would be appreciated. You can contact me anonymously via rumor box or drop me an email at fujirumor@gmail.com.

And stay tuned on Fujirumors also via facebook, twitter and RSS feed. .

have a great start in this new week

  1. At around that time Sony is said to introduce full frame NEX camera (at least according to SAR). I wonder what updated X-E1 would bring to the table.

    1. A lot of announcements seem to happening at that time. By the very least, probably an XE1 that has on sensor PDAF that also has digital split focus and an updated processor. However, it would take a significant increase in AF speed before I would consider upgrading.

        1. I might be tempted though if the AF is significantly better and it has a tilting LCD along with face detect AF. I’m having an extremely hard time just handing off my X-E1 to someone to take my picture since it’s difficult to explain how to change focus points on it.

    1. If you ask me, the actual Zeiss 16-70 F4 in X-mount would be awesome, but sadly Sony probably bought it to be exclusive. Of course, a Fujinon 16-70 F4 would suffice just as well, or better if it has the manual focus feature and aperture ring. 🙂

      1. in fact, it is even not a Zeiss lens , Sony designed it and developed it and just put the name because some European brand fanboys pay more than it says Sony.
do not get me wrong it is a great lens but a tad over priced for the silly Zeiss name.
I do not have any special feeling for German brands , so I prefer it was just plain Sony branded lens.
and if any one can charge Leica price , any current Asian optical company including Sigma and Samyang can get it better than Zeiss.
these Sony Zeiss lenses are all not Zeiss designed lenses but optically better than so-called real zeiss in ZF ZE lines .I have both the Sony Zeiss 24mmf2 ZA and Nikon mount 25mmf2ZF2 and the Sony lens (actually designed by KM) is a better lens optically in all ways.
to me Leica is very special brand but Zeiss?
        noway.

  2. Seems plausible.

With the X100s tech around, why wait. Improved EVF response time, phase-detect AF capability. These ‘fixes’ need to get out there asap. Of course some people would complaint that the upgrade is too small, or they want a 24MP sensor, but imho if there are going to roll camera’s off the production line, why not make sure that they at least feature Fuji’s most current tech available. First things first, right. And this way, they can use a new 24MP sensor to make people want the top model that follows (early 2014 or something), the X-Pro2. 😉

    1. Wrong forum mages but we appreciate your concern with our photographic needs… You see, people like me switched already to Fuji because of lenses… not promises about a FF or some other mythical camera body… But I do hope you have fun waiting for your camera, shouldn’t be long now… Perhaps they will release a lens too!

    2. FF is overrated , for smaller kind of mirrorless system like the Fuji X or Sony NEX, the APS-C is the sweet spot.
FF lenses are just a bit too big for tiny bodies.
I am not saying FF is dying but only very few people actually interested in it, and most of FF fanboys including myself already have more than one FF cameras.
so , I do not think Fuji has to go FF, it is already a quite well balanced system.

  3. What we all want from xe2/xe1s
    1. Weather sealing.
    2. A higher quality screen. like the xpro1. If it is a touch screen then fine.
    3. A larger grip, like the lumix gx7 (which has a superb grip)

    1. Larger grip? One of the main points of the mirrorless system is the smaller form factor. I sold all my DSLR stuff a while ago and found the X-E1 too small in the beginning, but last week I picked up a friend’s DSLR and it felt HUGE. You do get used to the smaller camera the more you use it and as your hand forgets the enormous grip it was used to. I bought a Really Right Stuff grip but have even stopped using that now.

  4. Way to release a bunch of lower end cameras and refreshes but leaving the XPro1 hanging in the breeze. I think an XPro1s/S would be much more needed before an X-E1s/2.

    1. E1 is more popular, makes sense to give it a sensor bump just so Fuji can nudge the price up a bit. Think it will need to be 24MP to get enough upgrader’s interested, otherwise for many iw will be a case of … why bother?

Would not be surprised if XP2 did not happen, at least not in an APS-C format, since no market for very expensive APS-C anymore. Price has fallen to much for it to be worth the effort. Keep in mind, no new XF lenses on the roadmap for some time now .. wonder why 😉

      1. hmmm that’s interesting thought regarding lenses. X-Pro2 could be a full frame with the new ‘starter’ set of 27-50-90? don’t think it will happen any time soon

    2. I agree with you James, the X-Pro does need to be refreshed soon but I think the strategy here with the X-E1s/2 is simple. They are going to do possibly a yearly refresh of the “E” model. Pro cameras get updated less often as manufacturers know that for professionals to upgrade would take a significant improvement for them to invest. An “E” model is more of a prosumer or higher end enthusiast camera where the X-Pro series is in this professional use category. I can see that they are using this strategy to get users onboard the X system and hopefully they will invest in lenses and future camera models.

Think about Nikon or Canon… They do not update their D4 and 1Dx category cameras every year, more like every 2 years, or when an Olympic/World Cup type world sporting event is to take place. Same goes for the D800 or 5DIII models, not updated often as they tend to be more likely professional use models. However the Rebels and d5200 type models get refreshed nearly every year.

Like you, I do wish they would release a new version of the X-Pro soon but hopefully Fuji’s strategy is to take its time refreshing it into something dramatic that would justify people to invest in the new camera.

      1. The only problem with this theory is that the XPro1 is not significantly better than the E1, nor is it that much more expensive – in fact, aside from the OVF its the same as the E1 and the M1. Fuji need to get more differentiation between these models however this runs against their strategy of “one sensor/platform many cameras”.

IMO they will struggle to sell much E1 above 1k, and need to feature up the XP1 if they want to get it back too its original price point or beyond. One need only glance over at Sony or Oly to see the problem Fuji has wrt to pricing.

        1. Hi Tim, Yes, I agree that the current X-Pro1 is not significantly different from the e1/m1. That is why I suggested that Fuji is likely to take its time in making the X-Pro2/s a significant upgrade to the original X-Pro. My post suggests Fuji create a more significant jump from X-E2/s to X-Pro2/s.

Fuji is establishing 3 levels in their body offering (4 with the X-A1). pricing aside this is a smart business play. Get people into the X-system, build up their lens collection, offer incremental upgrades to bodies as the end user outgrows their current body.

The pricing does not seem to be an issue with people who want to invest in the Fuji lens system (they can’t keep em on the shelf in my area). Obviously pricing is a sensitive issue with consumers as they want a lot for their dollar but I think Fuji justifies their pricing by producing the image quality they do. Markets drive price and pricing strategy is only a small condition in how to sell a product. Look at Leica.

  5. A weather sealed xe1 with boosted EVF, tilt screen, and better AF would be magical. The thing already takes magical photos. I think improving the body to better compete with the features on the OMD is more needed than boosting the sensor…IMO.

    1. Hold on a sec, even if the XE2 were weather-sealed, the X-lenses released so far aren’t. So it still wouldn’t make sense to take the XE2 body+lens out in the rain or whatever. Or am I missing something?

      1. Most m4/3 lenses aren’t weather sealed either, but both the E-M1 and E-M5 came with a (new) kit lens that is. And people love it. 🙂 Also, it should do the built quality and feel some good. But you’re right, not going to happen any time soon.

  6. I’d be willing to dump all of my Nikon Gear for:

XE2 with weather sealing, X100s/X20 focus, 3″ LCD, EVF with faster refresh
    16-80mm f/4 with weather sealing

This is my dream Fuji setup, and what would take for me to convert (or at least something close to this).

  7. I want to buy into some system – Nikon, Canon, Fuji. Never seem to be able to make the plunge. I mean, I enjoy street photography, travel and landscape, portrait, macro. But photography being my main hobby, not my career – I’m left wondering if the Fuji X series would suit me well. And secondly, I begin wondering if I wanted to make photography my career, would I then be undercut with most other pros using Nikons or Canons. I don’t want 2 systems.

    1. I personally wouldnt make any decisions on whether it’ll be a career or not. Unless you like being on government assistance, it’s nearly impossible to make photography a career these days. Not trying to be discouraging, just want to throw it out there. Some of the best photogs in the world these days only make ends meet by selling gadgets, promoting products and teaching classes. It’s an EXTREMELY difficult comodity field to make a living at now days.

      1. Oh, shut up! There are thousands of photographers all over the world making a good living. It’s not easy, granted, but talented, motivated people can do all sorts of things when they put their minds to it. Mike, if you want to be a photographer then be one and don’t let anyone talk you out of it.

    1. Hi
It seems that Fuji put the X100S sensor inside the X-E1 successor. But I’m confident that my trusted sources will come back with reliable information soon.
