  1. can someone explain to me these metabones? the more I search about them, the more confused I get.

    1) is there autofocus?
    2) why are some $99 and others 500?
    3) How in the world does this make an APS-C into a full frame?
    4) how do I explain to my wife that I “need” this?

    1. 1. The only Speed Booster that’s AF compatible is Canon’s EF-to-Sony’s NEX. So most likely MF only.

      2. $99 ones are “regular” adapter, not speed booster.

      3. The opposite of a teleconverter. I can’t word it correctly so I am not even going to try.

      4. Just buy it.

    2. It doesn’t turn an APS-C sensor into a full-frame sensor. What it does is allow you to mount a full-frame lens and achieve the same field of view as if the lens was mounted on a full-frame body. It does this by using a glass element in the adapter to “squeeze” the full-frame height/width down to the size of the APS-C sensor. This “squeezing” of light also intensifies the light – hence the 1-stop(?) “speed boost”.

Personally, I’m skeptical (in particular of the glass element and its ability to avoid introducing barrel/pincushion distortion or chromatic aberration). Although, Sony currently has an offer of a free Speed Booster with the purchase of one of the E-mount pro video cameras, so Sony obviously believes in them.

    3. I have NEX, but speed booster (or SB) is a Metabones (it’s a name of brand) adapter with a lens in it. That lens focuses bigger FF circle to a smaller APS-C size circle and thus makes any FF lens attached to it faster by one f stop – which is great for low-light! Another huge plus is that it makes any FF lens attached to APS-C sensor to have the same field of view as on FF camera: meaning 50mm FF lens will be 50mm lens on APS-C and NOT 75mm as without SB.

      1. Af is only made so far for Canon EF to NEX SB (but it is very bad implementation and is slow). On Fuji it will be MF.
      2. Cheaper ones don’t have lens inside and are not SB, but just simple dummy adapters – they don’t make lens 1 f stop faster and don’t change FoV.
      3. It makes FF lenses behave on APS-C as if you have FF camera: same field of view (35mm will be 35mm, 50mm wil be 50mm and so on), in addition it even makes any FF lens attached 1 f stop faster. However, keep in mind it cannot alter sensor itself, so Dynamic Range and ISO sensitivity will still be as of APS-C and not FF like – I hope that’s clear. Depth of Field however will be as of FF – so its nice to have that kind of adapter SB.
      4. You can tell your wife that instead of spending $2000 on FF camera like 6D or D600 you are going to spend only $500 and get an “FF camera”. In reality you will get some benefits of FF, but not all of them.

    1. The wont.
There is not enough difference between the lens registry distance in Leica M and Fuji X/Nex/M43 for the speedbooster optics to fit in an adapter

  2. And how does it achieve.. “increases maximum aperture by 1 stop ”

Does that mean if I mount an f2.0 lens, the speed booster will turn it into an f1.0 lens?

  3. I seem to remember reading that a Leica M to Fuji X speedbooster isn’t possible for some technical reason. Is that correct?

    1. Rangefinders, being mirror less, have a much shorter registration distance (distance from rear element to sensor) and thus no room for speed boosting glass. A regular M-adapter for Fuji X is maybe 12-15mm thick.

  4. It’s a shame they don’t make an M42 to Fuji X speed booster. I sure would love to enjoy the intended field of view of my old Takumars on the X-E1.

    1. I was doing some research because I was equally disappointed. Apparently if you buy the Contax Yashica version and get and m42 to Contax Yashica adapter the flange distance will be just about right and you should still have infinity focus. I haven’t tried it yet, but a lot of people with old yashicas use adapters so they can mount m42 lenses.

  5. Can anyone that has actually used a speedboster please say something about image quality? Is there any noticeable degradation?

    1. Actually image quality is supposed to IMPROVE slightly. The opposite of what happens with a teleconverter, which usually degrade image quality.

Yes really. There is a test here: https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2013/01/metabones-magic

What I want to know is; will focus peaking still work with one of these. Since it’s manual focus and all…

Imagine putting the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 on your X-Pro1. Like a 23mm f/1.0 lens. Or a 85mm f/1.4 = ~56mm f/1.0 … and sharper wide open than the lens would have been on full frame.

  6. I want an Auto focusing Nikon G mount speed booster!!! I also agree about the M42 mount!

@Ohwow, There are a good amount of review showing the IQ. For some lenses it works really well, for some its just ok. Some lenses, it actually makes them sharper and reduces the amount of CA. For some it increases. Some the corners are bad and some the corners are good. Its going to really depend on the original quality of the lens also

I believe I seen a review with the 135L and it actually out performed the lens on FF.

  7. Is it a silly question to ask… To use a speed booster between my Fuji-x 14mm or 35mm lens and my X Pro-1 body?

    1. @Daniel Jenkins: No. 1st, they don’t make an X mount to X mount adapter. 2nd, if you DID mount an APS-C lens on it the converter would reduce the size of the optical coverage to MFT size and you’d get severe vignetting.
