New Brown Fuji X-M1 images. Release in late July!

Here are some new images of the Brown X-M1 (via Digicaminfo). Yep, the X-M1 will come in Black, Silver and Brown. The camera is going to ship from July 27 while the Brown version is coming in September. You can buy it as body only, as kit version with the new XC16-50mm lens and as double lens kit version with the zoom and the new XF27mm F2.8 pancake.

The new zoom has a 12 lens in 10 groups design, 3 of them are aspherical lenses. The new 27mm pancake length is 23mm and weights 78g.

Still not super exact info yet about the price in dollars. But we hope to get it soon…

  1. I’m definitely putting an X-M1 on my list as a daily carry around to compliment my X-Pro1, but definitely not opting for the tan version. I can see where Fuji coming from with the faux Leica Hermes look, but they really don’t need to play the “me too” game when they have a product line up that is better than Leica to begin with. Some people will absolutely love this, but not me.

      1. I knew that one would get a giggle somewhere, but the simple truth from my perspective is that having owned an M8 the results from my X-Pro1 are better. OK for over a year I could have been using it all without having read the manual properly, but then that may just mean the X-Pro1 manual is better. Either way, glad to have made you chuckle, that’s never a bad thing.

    1. Leather is originally brown isn’t it, black is the unnatural thing. Leica doesn’t own tanned leather, or the mimicking of it, and wrapping it around a camera is simply a way to get a decent grip and make it look nice at the same time.

      1. The Leica model I was referring to is the Hermes Limited edition:
        http://www.bornrich.com/50000-leica-m9-hermes-edition.html
As far as I can tell they are the only cameras that have adopted this as a production edition, but I could well be wrong, there are a lot of cameras out there. The similarity is quite striking and it just struck a chord when I saw the Fuji images. However, as the latter posts prove, when it comes to the rights or wrongs of this particular colour scheme, I am, as I suspected I might be, in the minority.

        1. No i get where you’re coming from, i just don’t agree with the “me too” part of the story. Even if you said it looks like diarrhea i would have been fine with it. 😉

          1. I had written a rather lengthy reply justifying my comments, but as its all personal opinion I’ll let this one go so I deleted it. I’m going to buy the product anyway and this forum wasn’t intended as a soapbox for my personal beliefs on product design, so in essence it’s a moot point.

  2. 78g for the pancake? If the IQ is acceptable and it’ll cost around $/€250 I think I can forgive the lacking aperture ring 😉

  3. I just jumped on board and ordered the x-e1. Love the brown look of this camera!Would have went that way if the x-e1 had this color option. Interested to see how the image quality of the Fuji stands up to me Sony NEX5N with the 50 1.8. I used to shoot a Fuji s5, and loved the colors out of it.

    1. Actually looks great with the brown leather and silver lens imho. You don’t agree ? People seem to have stopped complaining about cameras getting the retro look with black leather and silver body, so why should this be any different. It’s not like it’s purple. 🙂

Though a silver lens is questionable, especially when it’s plastic, that can just look nasty in real life. Even if the product ‘photo’ looks good.

      1. We’ll know for sure in 3 days. But the brown “animal friendly” leather rarely looks good IRL, so I won’t hold my breath 😎

Speaking of the lens, silver plactic projects very cheap image. Hopefully they’ll offer it in black too.

…disturbing thought: what if silver on this “cheap” camera body is plastic, too? %)

  4. So two slow kit zooms now? I have the 2.8-4.0 which is not very fast. If it is constant 2.8 then I have no problem with XC16-50mm being 3.5-5.6.

  5. I really love the cleaner design with simpler lines. Other cameras now look a bit too retro. I am hoping Fujifilm will do the same to all new cameras (X-Pro2, X-E2, X30, X200).

Design aside, I can’t wait to see how the interface works with two unmarked control wheels. We have seen X10/20 mode dial and exposure compensation, while other cameras have shutter speed dial and exposure compensation (not counting XF1 of course). But it seems X-M1 approaches user-to-camera interaction in a new way, mode dial and “something”. Remains to be seen what, I hope they got it right.

  6. Just loaded this photo to Photoshop, selected color range that covers that leatherette – and played with Hue slider.

The odd thing is, any hue looks good on this camera. Try it yourself.

  7. Very nice, Olympus tried it with the Pen, but as with a most of their mirrorless they only went half the way.
But the silver lens is the sensation! Will the other lenses be released as silver versions as well? A silver-brown body with black lenses is not working from the aesthetical point …

    1. I wouldn’t mind having silver lens for my X-E1 myself. It would be nice if they released all the existing lens in silver too like Olympus and Leica do for their system.

  8. I out Aki Asihi’s white leather on my silver X-E1 and it looks great. Go to his website and you can see the Fuji’s in a lot of different colours.

  9. I wish the fuji new X-M1 to be more solid build than XE1. XE1 is hollow weight compared to Leica or Olympus. Small is good, solid is a must or it would not get the user’s confidence nor the weight for sharp photos.

I wil take a red one (like the red color of the Fuji little $400 point shoot camera). Is it called XF1?

    1. You have to hold your camera steady when you shoot, just like the gun. Heavy gun means lesser recoil, resulting in tighter groups. However, I rarely see cameras throwing away projectiles and exhaust gases, so they’re not exactly like guns. And Fuji X series don’t have a flopping mirror, so any camera shake is a result of operator error. To fully compensate for that, a camera must be made of cast iron and have an internal gyroscope… Personally, I prefer to tote a lightweight camera and perfect my trigger technique.

    2. Trent is right, all shake is due to the operator wit mirror less cameras, but I agree with Richard: The X-E1 feels way less solid than the X-Pro1 and that was a big turn off for me. I’d probably get used to the light, “cheap” feel… But feel much safer and less shaky with a solid camera 🙂

    3. If you miss the weight in your Fuji cameras you should consider adding metal arca-swiss baseplate from RRS. I’ve got it to use with my tripod but found it to improve the feel of the camera even handheld. It makes camera more solid and well balanced with heavier lens and even improves grip slightly by increasing effective height of the camera. I can’t imagine using X-E1 without it now. Highly recommend.
