X-entry level cameras rumor update: tilt screen and name: X-A1 (new sources)?

Note: Please read carefully if the rumor comes from trusted or new sources.

1) APS-C X-trans entry-level camera: We know that this camera won’t have a viewfinder (trusted sources), but according to a new source it will have a tilt screen.

2) The non X-trans very cheap camera: You remember when I told you that I guess it will be the sensor of the X100? Well, trusted sources told me that my personal supposition is wrong. It won’t be the APS-C of the X100… I’ll shut up and leave guesses to you in the comments 🙂

Another new source also told me that the X-Trans camera will be called X-A1 (A stands for Amateur.) Trusted sources could not confirm it. And if the Nippon magazine is right, the non X-Trans camera could be the X-M1… where M stand for…?

Now, let’s suppose that the name guessed by the new source (X-A1) is right, then this could be the new APS-C interchangeable Fuji X-family: X-M1, X-A1, X-E1, X-PRO1…

I remember you that trusted sources told me that there will be 2 new lenses here and one of those will be a 16-50 or 16-55.

  1. Whatever Fujifilm does with their line of bodies now is honestly of no interest to me. Let me explain. I own the X-Pro1 and the X100s. I’m more then satisfied with both these bodies as they stand now, and know that any new iterations of them will only be better. So, as long as Fujifilm keeps the lens mount the same for any new platform I’m thrilled because this means that all R&D money will be put to use developing the X-mount format…

This is nothing but a WIN situation for anyone invested in the X lineup at this point..

As for these rumored bodies.. Honestly, I have zero interest in them but I do like what it means for the X Line-up.

Leaving the guessing to us? That’s WAY too much pressure you are heaping on us now.

    1. Well your name surely matches the views expressed in your comment. 😛
      All very true though. 🙂
But also very contradicting, because obviously your should and do care.

      1. Not many people understand the meaning of my moniker… 🙂

I guess it is a bit paradoxical.. To rephrase it, the only reason I care about these new camera offerings from Fuji is because it helps the entire X-Mount lineup..

    2. I totally agree. I just bought the X-Pro 1, and I couldn’t be much happier with it. While these new cameras are of no interest to me, they could become popular with many others, which would then provide the necessary funding for Fuji to expand and improve the X-Pro 1 with Future models. My only request is that Fuji doesn’t completely ignore the X-Pro 1 this summer, as it is missing two key features, which should be addressed in a firmware update – minimum shutter speed settings in auto ISO; and, focus peaking.

  2. Wouldn’t X-N1 be a more appropriate name for the entry level body?

    (X-N1) Novice – (X-A1) Amateur – (X-E1) Expert – (X-Pro1) Pro

    1. I would also say E stands for Enthusiast.

M could be Mini, as used by Olympus in their PEN E-Px / E-PLx / E-PMx naming scheme.

  3. The APS-C X-trans entry-level camera sounds extremely interesting to me if it is significantly smaller than the X-E1. When do you expect it to be available in germany?

  4. I’m betting on an amateur level camera, as this is and a high end one – either to replace / improve the pro or even come in above the pro…something’s definitely happening with this model – over the wknd 9 major camera retailers crashed the price of the pro in the uk to below the £1,000 mark – that was a drop of more than £150 for some shops…

    1. James, in parts of Europe, particularly in Italy, the XP1 and XE1 have been availabe in the shops for under 700 euros, I got a spare body recently for 630 euros from shops who say they are not replacing current Fuji stock. Under £1000 is very high compared to prices that have been available elsewhere. The XP1 and XE1 are now such dinosaur technology compared to the new sensor, new viewfinder, new processor etc of the X100s, and nobody seems to want them any more, not even the shops 🙂 Why buy an an XE1 or and XP1 if the new X100 has a better sensor, better viewfinder, and a processor that runs at twice the speed, which means faster and better AF? I think you’re right, we will soon see a replacement for the XP1, and it’s going to be rather interesting.

  5. Why not just admit you don’t have a bloody clue–“trusted sources” and new sources notwithstanding?

Here’s a FACT: Fujifilm Canada is getting very aggressive on pricing, especially X-E1 kits. Until recently, an X-E1+18-55+EF-X20 flash was going for C$1234. Now the same kit, minus flash, is C$1149. What’s that telling us? Summer/vacation promo? Excess inventory? New stuff coming?

    1. That flash alone costs $150, so your case only tells us that there was a great deal with discounted flash. What’s that telling us? Flash promo? Excess inventory? New revolutionary flash system coming?

      1. Try $50-$75 more, at least, for the EF-X20. Fuji obviously is keen to move these. Like ’em or not, it’s not been a huge selling camera.

  6. It is very logical to have a 4 level camera line-up – with clear definitions! Compare to how some competitors mess around.
Even if you do not need all four variants, we should all be happy as Fuji strengthens the system as such, meaning better profit = further product development.
Personally I patiently wait for the X-Pro2 or X-E2. Until then I have to live with a D800 and an RX100 🙂

  7. Wouldn’t X-M1 stand for mini? I would imagine two cameras slotted against the E-PM2 and E-PL5.

    Personally, I’m looking at the X-E1 soon…

    1. I can imagine that the cheap one with a X-Trans-Sensor is only without viewfinder but with a tilt screen and a smaller body but more or less the same dials and the cheaper one have the dials of the X20 so that is easier for beginnersto handle it.

  8. X-A1 sounds silly if A stands for amateur..wont be a smart from the marketing guys specially no amateur like to be reminded of how amateur he’s ;D

    1. Hi Doma,

I wouldn’t buy such a camera, but I practically gave up professional photography about 12 years ago when the Internet was showing signs of people wanting video more than photos, and I returned to amateur photography. Now, about 80% of my work is purely amateur, and only 20% paid for by clients, and I am happy now to think of myself as an amateur, because I am now free to do the type of photography that I want to do, without being constrained by clients’ demands and expectations. I am PROUD to have returned to amateur photography 🙂

  9. A stands for Amateur ==> really?

Lol ! That would surprise me very much. It is highly unlikely that ANY manufacturer of photo equipment would call ANY of its products “amateur”. Marketers would view it as demeaning, unappealing, etc.

    1. Well, it just says ‘A’, it’s not actually going to be a word you know. It’s just the first letter of the alphabet, quite fitting for A starters camera. They have their reasons, and we’re free to make of it what we want.

    2. X-A1 – Amatuer user range of products
X-E1 – Experienced user range of products
XPro-1 – Professional user range of products.

  10. I still don’t understand the purpose of the very cheap camera having a new sensor, entry-level cameras don’t usually comes with a new sensor.

Could this câmera have a smaller sensor? A m4/3-sized sensor? Could Fuji, as part of the consortium, use the same sensor but not the same mount? Could this have a 1″ sensor?

I don’t understand this even cheaper camera.

  11. I also think the M will stand for Monochrome. It will basically be an X-E or X-Pro that is monochrome only with Fuji film B/W film simulations for JPEG.

  12. The X-A1 nomenclature story has been around nearly 12 months. That is hardly new news or really even a rumour.

    1. except that the X-A1 has the X-Trans sensor and it’s above the X-M1 that is the cheapest one with normal sensor.

  13. How about M for manual/minimalist/monochrome. Pic one, two or three of these and you have a unique little camera.

Manual: no auto-exposure program, simplifies the firmware, no exposure compensation dial, but maybe iso dial.

Minimalist: only stills, no other schnick-schnack, simplifies firmware and no twiddling with controls.

Monochrome: makes sensor cheaper and increases sensitivity and sharpness, decreases processing complexity and therefore power consumption. Also simplifies firmware a lot.

  14. most of us like the typical Fuji style , the actual Pro, XE1 and 100s are very good and nice up to date camera’s.Why pushing hard to other and newer models? By the way… a tilt screen would kill the sweet retro style anyway, bad idea!

  15. My guess on the name… and I know about this stuff: they’ll drop the X, and call in the ‘Fuji Pringle’. This’ll lead to a law suit from the Pringle snack in a tube corporation, which’ll bring fuji to it’s knees, the mount will be orphaned and you’ll all buy M43, capitalism being what it is, the M43 price will shoot up, in response the Pringle manufacturers will launch their own mid range interchangeable cameras. the mount will be about the size of a Pringles can lid.

You’ll get crumbs on the sensor.
