Lens Turbo (focal reducer) to come for Fuji.

We got in contact with the Chinese company that just launched the new “Lens Turbo” adapter which is a focal reducer as the [shoplink 12112 ebay]Speed Booster[/shoplink] adapter but with a different design. They told us that nine new adapters will be launched this year:

PK, AI, EF, FD, MD, C/Y, Leica R, and M42 to Fuji X mount.

The image on top shows you their first adapter made for the NEX system. The company that makes the lens also makes the [shoplink 11236 ebay]Mitakon 35mm 0.95 for X-mount (you can find them here on eBay)[/shoplink].

  1. Wow – I thought these ‘things’ were somehow patented or similar? Amazingly, these days – it’s all about the money, I guess;o) Well, well what can one do…. Wonder if Metabones and Caldwell Photographic are letting this one ‘slip’ easily or perhaps their patent isn’t worldwide?

    1. Hi, i believe they can get around patent infringement by using a slightly different magnification amount. Cheers jon

    2. Patents don’t mean anything in China though – have a good idea, Chinese copies will exist very soon after.

      1. I think these guys in China actually delivered their products BEFORE Metabones shipped out their product.

Just because Metabones announced their product earlier doesn’t mean they come up with the concept first. This concept has been around since the 1970’s.

And, would you claim that is is a copy if test results show the Lens Turbo performs better than the Metabones’s Speed Booster?

  2. M42 to X-Pro 1? I thought Metabones said not possible for Speedbooster to work with Leica M42 to X-Pro 1?

    1. @ Wen, great question.

My thought is that this is NOT a clone NOR a copy.

First thought comes in my mind is that the metabones version has AF which means the optical formula has to be different to accommodate the extra AF components.

  3. Been waiting for a speedbooster for Nikon from metabones for some time now, but feels like these guys going to beat them to that. Will be interesting to see reviews of the optical quality.

    1. yup – probably around half (well, a little more) the MetaBones-price initially, at least… and a reduction ratio of around x0.726 on the Zongyi as opposed to x0.71 of the MetaBones.

And at least finally an M42 version will come out, too:o)

  4. The Lens Turbo has got different reducing factor so basically it doesn’t violate Metabones patent.

  5. hi jon,
yeah, did a little ‘investigation’ and it’s pretty clear that this seems to be the case – at least for the diff magnification-factor….

  6. Why Nikon AI-S lenses only? Does that mean AF-D lenses can’t be used? They’re all F mount as far as I know…

    1. AFD and AFS lenses mount to AiS no problem. The mount is the same. The designation: AiS in this case suggests: no AF of any kind, but aperture priority stop down F Mount compatible.

  7. Seriously, this is so cool.. I have ALOT of old M42 lenses.
My Helios 44m-4 will give full circle fullframe swirly bokeh, and the Fujinon 50mm f/1.4 will give seriously shallow DOF…. This is great news!

    1. Do you use the Helios on fuji ? Is the swirly bokeh nice like on full frame or not?
I think swirly bokeh is great when I use the perimeter of lens, and apsc doesn’t use it.

  8. I love to have one, however, isn’t what makes the metabones one so good, is the glass used?
Do you think this one will be near as good?
I hope it is, but have my doubts.
What I’m REALLY waiting on, is, one that has electronics for Canon EOS.
Not for AF, but, to power the lens.
I have two focus via wire EOS lens that I’d LOVE to use on my FujiFilm X-E1.
Namely, the Canon 200/1.8L, and the Canon 50/1.0L

  9. @ buggz:
    Wow !! 50 f/1 on x-e1!!! You’re crazy !!!! 🙂
    Very very very nice !
if I had a lens like that would buy just an original speedbooster !
    I can’t wait 🙂

  10. You guys are crazy. If I remember correctly, this manufacture’s name translate to First China Optical Group and so on. It is the civilian name of an army technical bureau responsible for designing optics for high tech weapons. It should easily be on par with Metabones just like their f/0.95 lens.

    1. Hope so.

Question is the price, but in any case competition is good !

Metabones might even have to lower theirs. Imho they should anyway.

  11. Which one of you geniuses can point out the “knock off” or “clone” part of the this product’s optical designs? Is the Sigma 35mm 1.4 a “clone” of the Nikon 35mm 1.4?

Does anyone of you have additional information to substantial your claims?

What else can Metabones patent other than the designs of the optics?

    Metal? Glass? LOL, patent trolls.
